Application of surface modification technologies to improve performance of hot sheet metal forming tools: A review

Abstract: Hot sheet metal forming tools are exposed to severe operating conditions which cause adhesion, abrasive wear and fatigue. This causes a reduction in tool life and increased tool maintenance costs. On the other hand, the need for eco-friendly tools has arisen. Surface modification technologies have created opportunities in the tooling industry because of their capability to reduce the thermal and mechanical wear of hot sheet metal forming tools hence extending tool life. However, the technologies have some chal… Show more

“…A layer of the part is scanned according to CAD data, once the boundary of a layer is scanned the interior surface inside the layer is solidified. In this way layer by layer is solidified and part is produced (10). The company named Cubital Ltd evolved this technique in 1986. solid ground curing uses a photopolymer for the fabrication of parts.…”

“…For instance, using appropriate coatings and by corrective cooling of the tools can lead to an improved tool life. Different state of the art surface modification technologies to improve the performance of hot forming tools is presented by [19]. Studies have also been made to understand the high temperature tribological behaviour of different hot forming tool materials [20].…”

“…As implied in [3] it is important to accurately estimate the amount of material necessary for the machining of the tooling, which reduces the CO2 footprint of the tools. Besides, the forming tools used in hot forming experiences high tool wear, fatigue, and thermal loads compared to that of cold forming ultimately leading to a lower life time of the tools [19]. For instance, using appropriate coatings and by corrective cooling of the tools can lead to an improved tool life.…”

“…Now We use lots of alloy powder for laser cladding in which Ni, Cr, Si, B Fe, Al, Ti, Co are commonly used for different determination (1)(2)(3). Different Researchers have applied different compositions of cladding powder and varied different laser cladding parameters and observed their effects on different mechanical properties i.e.…”

“…Loss in surface properties occurs due to corrosion, erosion, wear, etc. Wear is a distortion process of solid surface by eliminating surface material (1)(2). The presence of air alloys of metal gets oxidized at higher temperature, oxidation further developed at temperature is maybe the cause of corrosion occurrence (3).…”
