Application of Response Surface Methodology for Predicting Flank Wear in Turning Operation

Abstract: Wear has drastic effects on flank wear during the turning process, which affects tool life and the surface roughness of the finished component. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of factors such as cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut on flank wear of a highspeed steel (HSS) cutting tool during the turning process of a mild steel component. A mathematical model was developed relating flank wear and the main factors such as cutting speed V, feed rate F, and depth of cut T. Response surface m… Show more

“…Flank wear has been emphasized more than crater wear during analysis of cutting tool wear. Thangavel [46] stated that flank wear results in changes to the mechanics of the cutting process and changes in the dimension of the product. But it was also stated that flank wear increases the tendency for chatter which is quite contradictory and seems incorrect.…”

“…RSM is an optimization method that was introduced in the early 1950s by Box and Wilson. 21 The application of RSM method in manufacturing system can be referred to the literatures (Assid et al, 22 Yang and Tseng, 23 Zhang et al, 24 Sajadi et al, 25 Thangavel et al, 26 Jahanbakhsh et al 27 ). The RSM method based on FFD and regression analysis is used to fit the approximate function between design parameters and response variables.…”
