Application of remote sensing data for monitoring eutrophication of floodplain water bodies

Abstract: The aim of this article was to investigate the influence of structural features of the floodplain water network on the spatial and temporal dynamics of chlorophyll-a concentration as an indicator of eutrophication. The research was conducted in the waters of the “Dnipro-Orilskiy” Nature Reserve. The geographic information base with polygonal objects which represented water bodies of the reserve was created on the basis of detailed geographical maps and the high resolution space images. The water bodies were ch… Show more

“…This is a very dangerous trend that will negatively affect the ecological state of the Azov Sea (Kunakh & Fedyay 2020). This trend may cause significant salinization of the Sea of Azov waters and an even greater increase in its eutrophication (Fedonenko et al, 2022;Zhukov et al, 2022). Alternative sources of fresh water supply to the Sea of Azov may be the Kuban and small and medium-sized rivers of the northern Azov region.…”

“…However, such a position is subject to criticism on the basis of the conceptual essence of the term, which implies the conditions of existence of biological objects, rather than their association with something [111]. Therefore, it is critically noted that the floristic studies should either abandon the use of community names to denote the habitat of individuals or their populations at all, or justify the possibility of their use in an ecological sense [112,113]. If coenomorphs are discrete classes of plant species that are separated from each other to a greater extent than can be assumed based only on the continuum nature of ecological differences between species, then information on the coenomorphic membership of a species and, consequently, the coenomorphic structure of a community, can carry additional information for indicating the properties of an ecotope [114,115].…”

“…The measurements of electrical conductivity, temperature, water clarity and dissolved oxygen content were carried out at 291 monitoring points on 5, 6 and 7 August 2023. This period corresponds to the seasonal peak in temperature when hypoxic crisis phenomena are most likely to occur in water bodies (Fedonenko et al 2022). The measurements were made between 11 and 15 am, when the daily temperature variation was the smallest, and the measured water temperatures can be considered as close as possible to the maximum daily temperatures.…”
