Application of Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques for the Analysis of Lake Water Fluctuations: A Case Study of Ugii Lake, Mongolia

Abstract: Ugii Lake is a freshwater lake located in the steppe region of Mongolia and is an important breeding and staging area for a wide variety of waterfowl. Remote sensing and geographic information system techniques were used to estimate fluctuations in the surface area and water balance of Ugii Lake. To estimate the changes in lake water balance, lake water fluctuations should be analyzed using the most accurate methods. A different water extraction technique was applied, and the results were compared with field s… Show more

“…In western Mongolia, a German-Mongolian drilling program from between 1995 and 2004 focused on Uvs Nuur and other lakes and presented the first picture of paleoenvironmental evolution dating back to the Late Pleistocene based on radiocarbon and pollen analyses [15,18,19,59]. Studies at multiple other lakes in the region added valuable information, for example, for Khar Nuur, Telmen Nuur, and Ugii Nuur [60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67]. In northern Mongolia, the Khuvsgul and Darkhad regions became the focus of lake research [68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78].…”

“…ESRI's ArcGIS series software not only provides mature industry solutions in 2D GIS but also has a full-featured 3D Analyst extended analysis module and a 3D GIS visualization environment based on Scene and Globe in 3D GIS. Skyline proposed a 3D GIS solution from the perspective of Globe, displaying massive spatial data in a three-dimensional interactive way and providing true three-dimensional GIS application analysis functions not only in a large-scale scene but also in a small-scale high-precision sand table environment [8].…”

“…Remote sensing (RS) is a quickly growing technology that provides inexpensive and trusty information for environmental changes at different scales, also it can provide data longcollected repeatable, and even real-time (Magsar et al, 2021). The use of remote sensing (RS) data is a good option for monitoring and mapping dynamic surface water areas such as wetlands.…”
