Application of random search method for maximum power point tracking in partially shaded photovoltaic systems

Abstract: The power-voltage (P-V) curve of a photovoltaic (PV) power generation system under partially shaded conditions (PSCs) is largely non-linear and multimodal, and hence, global optimisation techniques are required for maximum power point tracking. A traditional optimisation algorithm is proposed here, namely random search method (RSM) for tracking the global maximum power point in a solar power system under PSC. The RSM is based on the use of random numbers in finding the global optima and is a gradient independe… Show more

“…In Figure 5, the blocking and bypass diodes are used to protect the solar PV array from the reverse current and hotspot problems. 61,62 The panels are under zero shading condition, ie, all the panels are uniformly illuminated; the I-V curve of the individual module is summed up and forms a single peak in the P-V curve. The I-V and P-V characteristics of the five series connected solar PV modules under three different conditions are shown in Figure 6A,B, respectively.…”

“…Within the meta-heuristic algorithms, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is the most used algorithm in literature, thanks to its simple implementation and powerful behaviour at PSC. Other methods in this group are, simulated annealing [8], Grey-Wolf optimization [9], DEPSO [10], firefly colony [11] and artificial bee colony. All these algorithms are investigated for advantages and drawbacks in the following sub-sections.…”
