Application of particle image velocimetry to dusty plasma systems

Abstract: Particle image velocimetry is a fluid measurement technique that has been used for more than 20 years to characterize the particle transport and thermal state of dusty plasma systems. This manuscript provides an overview of this diagnostic technique, highlighting the strengths and limitations that are associated with its use. Additionally, the variations of this technique that have been applied in the study of dusty plasma systems will be discussed, along with a small selection of measurements that can be made… Show more

“…Ferrite cores are manufactured in a wide variety of shapes, EC, ETD, EF, U, RM, E, and many other shapes. For instance, an E-core has been recommended to be used for an HF power transformer having permeability 10010% [23,5,16,17].…”

“…Particle image velocimetry (PIV) analysis is performed on the still images using openPIV software to determine the velocity of the dust particles in a two-dimensional plane (Taylor et al. 2010; Williams 2016). A total of 850 still images of the rotating dust structure are recorded with a sCMOS camera at a resolution pixel at 142.5 frames per second.…”

“…Diagnostics of the dust component of dusty plasmas has the goal to measure several quantities: size and chemical composition, [ 105,112,165–169 ] positions and velocities of single microparticles, [ 170–172 ] their number density, and charge. [ 21,173–177 ] Diagnostics of size and chemical composition makes sense only in case they are not known with sufficient accuracy or significantly change during the experiment, that is, when the dust particles are grown in the plasma or undergo significant sputtering.…”
