Application of optimization algorithms to improve the vibroacoustic characteristics of pumps

BACKGROUND: Noise at production site or at any other place where technical equipment operates is a huge issue. It has a strong negative effect on human nervous system, reduces average lifespan and causes a number of severe diseases. That is why reduction of noise, produced by pumps, is one of the current priorities of hydraulic engineering. AIMS: In this study, the experimental research of sound transmission through an operating pump and a non-operating pump was carried out. The aim of the research is to find out, whether the last stage of a multistage pump is the main source of hydrodynamic noise (HDN) in pressure line (or the first stage in suction line), or all stages somehow contribute to HDN. METHODS: The experiment was carried out on the TsN-2 two-stage impeller pump. In order to generate a sinusoidal signal, an imbedded generator, a vibration test rig and a power amplifier were used. Data acquisition for measurement of HDN and vibrations was performed with use of a conditioning amplifier, a hydrophone and an accelerometer. A 4-channel spectrum analyzer served as a device for processing the studied signal. In addition, a theoretical calculation, considering some physical assumptions, was carried out in order to obtain a more general and accurate concept. RESULTS: After completing the experiment, hydrodynamic noise levels and differences for three cases were obtained. These cases are for the switched-on pump, the switched-off pump and for the pump with the removed stage. The data obtained with hydrophones (hydrodynamic noise levels) was correlated with the data obtained with accelerometers (vibration levels). As the correlated data analysis result, the sound insolation distribution over the spectrum was obtained. CONCLUSIONS: According to the study results, it can be concluded that the absence of one of two stages ambiguously affected on the sound-insolation properties of the pump. Moreover, no firm conclusions can be drawn about the pump operation influence on the change in its sound-insolation properties.

BACKGROUND: In the introduction to the article, a review of publications on cavitation, vibration and noise in centrifugal pumps, including the issues of cavitation erosion of impellers, is carried out. AIMS: Comparison of cavitation properties of a centrifugal pump of a mobile pumping unit with and without a pre-engineered screw by computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling. METHODS: The calculation of the flow part of a pre-injected impeller stage is described and the CFD model of its hydrodynamic simulation is described. In the CFD model, Navier-Stokes equations averaged over the Reynolds number and the working fluid continuity equation were used. A two-phase fluid model was used to simulate cavitation. RESULTS: The final results of the calculations carried out in the above models are presented. Calculations were obtained for a pump with impeller with and without an upstream stage (screw). For the impeller without a screw, the cavitation margin of 4.7 m was obtained, which is critical for such a pump. For a pump with an impeller with an upstream auger the cavitation margin is 1,7 m, that is much better and allows to show efficiency of such solution. CONCLUSIONS: The requirement of hydrodynamic modeling for selection of optimal flow part of centrifugal pump to improve its cavitation characteristics is formulated.

Selection of the Diffuser Type and Optimization of the Flow Path Part of a Low Speed Multistage Centrifugal Pump

The issue of ensuring high energy efficiency of high-power pumps is relevant, since an in-crease in hydraulic efficiency of such pump flow parts leads to significant savings in the operation costs. Introduction of digital simulation technologies for the viscous fluid flow makes it possible to optimize geometry of the flow path elements at the design stage and predict pump characteristics with sufficient degree of accuracy. The main elements influencing characteristics of the multi-stage pumps flow parts include impellers and taps. Most often, vane and channel diffusers are used as retractors in the multistage pumps. Results of designing and optimizing flow parts of the low speed multistage centrifugal pump with both types of diffusers are presented, as well as predictive characteristics of pumps obtained using the computational fluid dynamics methods. Hydraulic efficiency of a stage with the channel-type guide (optimized version) is by 0.3 % higher than the efficiency of a stage with the vane-type guide. Both optimized flow paths have a non-sinking nature of pressure characteristics in the low flow region. The pump stage with the channel-type guide has a smaller radial overall dimension than the stage with the vane diffuser = 0.88) and higher design manufacturability. It was found that the most preferable option for the feed electric pump stage with the ns = 85 speed factor is the optimized flow path with the channel-type diffuser
