Application of Novel Drugs for Corneal Cell Regeneration

Abstract: Corneal transplantation has been the only treatment method for corneal blindness, which is the major cause of reversible blindness. However, despite the advancement of surgical techniques for corneal transplantation, demand for the surgery can never be met due to a global shortage of donor cornea. The development of bioengineering and pharmaceutical technology provided us with novel drugs and biomaterials that can be used for innovative treatment methods for corneal diseases. In this review, the authors will d… Show more

“…Rho-kinase (ROCK) inhibitor is a serine/threonine protein kinase that participates in regulating cell signaling pathway. Recently ROCK has been introduced as an innovative therapeutic agent for corneal endothelial dystrophy (Han et al, 2018). The compilation of these approaches can be a promising method for visual rehabilitation in patients suffering from corneal dystrophies.…”

“…NGF eye drops have become a promising therapeutic modality for the treatment of NK. Clinically, it promotes corneal epithelial healing, improves tear function and stimulates corneal nerves regeneration [111]. Several studies have established the safety and efficacy of NGF eye drops in the management of NK [112][113][114].…”

“…Even in absence of adverse events, their application remains limited to the treatment of dry eye-related symptoms. Promising new strategies have been suggested for a wider approach to the anterior segment pathologies, addressing, for example, neurotrophic keratitis, persistent epithelial defects, diabetic keratopathy, and diabetic neuropathy, such as the use of topical insulin, naltrexone, ARIs, substance P, and different growth factors [160,169,170,174,200].
