Application of normalisation process theory in understanding implementation processes in primary care settings in the UK: a systematic review

Abstract: Background: Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) provides a framework to understand how interventions are implemented, embedded, and integrated in healthcare settings. Previous reviews of published literature have examined the application of NPT across international healthcare and reports its benefits. However, given the distinctive clinical function, organisational arrangements and the increasing management of people with a wide variety of conditions in primary care settings in the United Kingdom, it is importa… Show more

“…After the program there were no significant changes in the assessment of CVD risk factors, the achievement of BP and blood lipid targets or the prescription of risk-reducing medications. Normalisation Process theory provided a framework to analyse participants experiences of implementing the program and focused on the work required to embed and normalise QI processes in the general practice settings [ 22 ]. The qualitative data demonstrated significant real-world barriers in implementation in all four NPT domains but particularly within collective action and reflexive monitoring.…”

“…Because NPT has its origins in research on the implementation of complex healthcare interventions, it does not see the intervention as a thing-in-itself, but rather as an assemblage or ensemble of beliefs, behaviours, artefacts, and practices that may play out differently over time and between settings [ 8 ]. It is supported by empirical studies using both qualitative and quantitative methods and by systematic reviews that have explored its value in different research domains [ 12 – 14 ].…”

“…A semi-structured interview guide was developed based on Normalisation Process Theory (NPT). NPT provides a flexible and pragmatic framework to help understand how interventions are implemented, embedded and sustained in complex healthcare settings, including primary care [ 20 – 22 ]. NPT is comprised of four core constructs (i.e.…”
