Application of nonlinear design optimization for power converter components

Abstract: A computer-aided design approach for power converter components is described. A designer with a minimum of programming and optimization experience can interface with nonlinear optimization routines to rapidly perform design trade-offs which would be impossible by hand. A power converter design using MOSFET and bipolar junction transistor (BJT) switches is shown to illustrate the power of optimization routines in power electronics. Realistic design values and available vendor components can be incorporated in a… Show more

“…If we interpret the physical system represented by Figure 1 to be a stacked actuator ( Figure 4) bonded rigidly to a mass, then the constants K1 and K2 are given by K1 = ---and K2 = 1w (9) nd Equation (9) allows us to couple the actuator equations to the dynamics of the structure in Figure 49. The modifications in the model to account for the anhysteretic nonlinearity between the polarization and the electric field are described in the following section.…”

“…A simultaneous optimization considering control and design parameters as optimization variables has also been presented in [1]. Genetic Algorithms (GAs) [2][3] [4], Augmented Lagrangian (ALAG) [5][6] [7], and Sequential quadratic programming (SQP) techniques [8], are usually the selected optimization procedures. In order to speed-up the computation time, the design models are usually based on analytical formulation.…”

“…Adopting mathematical optimization methods can provide a better design to minimize the power dissipation and the total weight of the circuit [2]. In the past few years, some efforts have been done on this topic [3][4][5][6]. In this paper, a detailed optimization method for designing portable power amplifiers is illustrated.…”
