Application of NIR Reflectance Spectroscopy on Rapid Determination of Moisture Content of Wood Pellets

Abstract: NIR spectroscopy was used to measure the moisture concentration of wood pellets. Pellets were conditioned to various moisture levels between 0.63% and 14.16% (wet basis) and the moisture concentration was verified using a standard oven method. Samples from various moisture levels were separated into two groups, as calibration and validation sets. NIR absorption spectral data from 400 nm to 2500 nm with 0.5 nm intervals were collected using pellets within the calibration and validation sample sets. Spectral wav… Show more

“…Other authors working on NIR spectrometry and Fusarium-damaged wheat have related changes at 1420 nm to reduced water content (Barbedo et al, 2015), at 1200 nm to ergosterol levels (Dowell, Ram, & Seitz, 1999) and at 1480 nm to chitin levels (Delwiche et al, 2011). A change near the 1450 nm is observed as a result of different moisture contents (Sundaram, Mani, Kandala, & Holser, 2015). Fig.…”

“…The bands at 1215, 1340, 1410 and 1645 nm were identified as the most contributing bands for class differentiation. Absorbances at 1215 and 1340 nm might be from CH stretch second overtone 54 and O-H stretch first overtone from isolated hydroxyl groups 55 respectively. It is quite interesting to note that at bands 1215 and 1340 nm, L. ivanovii and L. monocytogenes are comparable as opposed to L. innocua.…”

“…The results obtained from this work can be considered useful information of industrial interest to predict the melting behavior of forest biomass ash. [12], [13], [14] Based on some of the literature and the problems above, in this research, it is necessary to conduct an initial study of wood pellets taken from underutilized sawmill waste, to be developed into biomass fuel in the form of pellets. The purpose is that the results of this study can be a reference that can be applied to the need for renewable fuels.…”
