Application of New Biomedical Materials in Orthodontic Appliances

Abstract: This review article describes the application and characteristics of certain biomedical materials in orthodontic appliances. The elastic recoil of shape memory polymers, determination of the forces and moments experienced by the brackets and eventually by the tooth, reduction in treatment time by employing self-healing smart brackets and decreased enamel lost during debonding due to usage of biomimetic adhesives such as dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) is discussed. Increased plaque retention and microbial attach… Show more

“…The same data were obtained regarding the parameters of the lower respiratory tract [2]. Subjects with a hyperdivergent skeletal pattern, who belonged to skeletal classes I or II with malocclusion, showed a statistically significantly narrower upper pharyngeal area compared to normodivergent and hypodivergent faces [17].…”

“…It represents the research conducted (Figure 11 a) on different aspects of Determinants, such as women, infants, and inequality. It mainly focuses on delivery care services (Pulok et al, 2016 ), Intimate partner violence (Mohammed et al, 2017 ), maternal health care services (Ganle, 2016 ; Mehata et al, 2017 ), and mortality (Ahmed et al, 2016 ; Dendup et al, 2018 ). Middle-Income-Countries is a highly developed and isolated theme that represents research conducted on Middle-Income-Countries (Figure 11 b) with living conditions of poor rural households, Early Childhood Development (Black et al, 2015 , 2017 ; Richter et al, 2017 ), Equity in vaccination coverage nutrition (Arsenault et al, 2017 ), and child marriage (Kalamar et al, 2016 ).…”

“…In addition, the shape recovery of some SMPs could last up to approximately 3 months, which might be suitable for orthodontic applications (Small et al, 2010). These advantages may qualify them to be introduced in the fabrication of orthodontic appliances for treatment of initial alignment and leveling of aesthetically concerned patients (Nakasima et al, 1991), as well as the correction of malaligned and severely rotated teeth (Mahmood et al, 2019).…”

“…Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are one of the novel materials to be recently introduced into the field of dentistry, particularly for orthodontic applications (Mahmood et al, 2019;Elshazly et al, 2021). They provide great potential for applications in medical materials (Lendlein and Langer, 2002;Zhang et al, 2009;Meng and Li, 2013).…”
