Application of Navigated Ultrasound for Assessment of the Anterior Pelvic Plane in Patients With Degenerative Hip Diseases

Abstract: Considering the noninvasiveness of the method and affordability of the hardware used in our system, it can be used in preoperative and postoperative measurements of pelvic orientation for supporting surgery planning and evaluation of treatment outcomes.

“…Using the transducer, the operator visualizes the pelvic landmarks that define the anterior pelvic plane and marks their positions in the US image. These positions, together with the geometry of the US beam and the orientation of the transducer at the moment of acquisition, are used to compute the pelvic tilt angle . By convention, the measured angle is negative for anterior and positive for posterior pelvic rotation.…”

“…The symphysis pubis was marked as a darker hypoechoic line between two bony structures. With the referenced 3D coordinates of APP and the internal orientation sensor of the mobile unit, PT is computed by the central unit application using algorithms that were presented in a previous publication [17]. The PT angle is calculated against the gravity vector (0 • ) in the upright position and against the horizontal vector (0 • ) in the supine position.…”

“…13 With the use of navigated ultrasound (US), it is possible to assess pelvic tilt individually, noninvasively, and in different body positions. 14,15 The technology used in this study could be applied in the near future as an important tool in pelvic tilt-adjusted acetabular cup alignment.…”
