Application of Natural Molecules in Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract: Perovskite solar cells (PSCs), one of the most promising photovoltaic technologies, have been widely studied due to their high power conversion efficiency (PCE), low cost, and solution processability. The architecture of PSCs determines that high PCE and stability are highly dependent on each layer and the related interface, where nonradiative recombination occurs. Conventional synthetic chemical materials as modifiers have disadvantages of being toxic and costly. Natural molecules with advantages of low cost,… Show more

“…102 A summary of the use of natural biomaterials and natural molecules as additives in perovskites, their interaction mechanisms with the perovskite material, and their effects on the performance of PSCs has been done by Chen and his team. 103 The area of natural products is broad, as it encompasses animal-derived and plant-derived products (phytochemicals). This review narrows the focus to the application of phytochemical-based natural products as additives in PSCs.…”

“…[17][18][19] Promising interface materials should exhibit high stability, including environmental stability, to prevent the permeation of environmental molecules that can cause energy loss when carriers pass, which, in turns, leads to a drop in carrier mobility performance. 89 Conversely, recently proposed approaches of the diffusion engineering of ions and molecules have opened new routes to enhance the stability and efficiency of solar cells. [90][91][92] The high stability of bulk and layered modifications of Zn 2 (V, Nb, Ta)N 3 in a moist environment has already been confirmed, 21 while other environmental molecules have not yet been taken into close examination.…”

“…An increasing number of natural additives are being incorporated into PSCs, such as caffeine, theophylline, theobromine, 27 capsaicin, 28 and α-terpineol. 29 These ‘green’ molecules with stable structures derived from nature are eco-friendly and readily accessible, 30 and thus, their use has resulted in the evolution of a new trend of passivation molecules.…”
