Although the pesticide hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and its isomers have long been banned, their presence in the environment is still reported worldwide. In this study, we investigated the bioaccumulation potential of α, β, and δ hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers in black alder saplings (Alnus glutinosa) to assess their environmental impact. Each isomer, at a concentration of 50 mg/kg, was individually mixed with soil, and triplicate setups, including a control without HCH, were monitored for three months with access to water. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry revealed the highest concentrations of HCH isomers in roots, decreasing towards branches and leaves, with δ-HCH exhibiting the highest uptake (roots—14.7 µg/g, trunk—7.2 µg/g, branches—1.53 µg/g, leaves—1.88 µg/g). Interestingly, α-HCH was detected in high concentrations in β-HCH polluted soil. Phytohormone analysis indicated altered cytokinin, jasmonate, abscisate, and gibberellin levels in A. glutinosa in response to HCH contamination. In addition, amplicon 16S rRNA sequencing was used to study the rhizosphere and soil microbial community. While rhizosphere microbial populations were generally similar in all HCH isomer samples, Pseudomonas spp. decreased across all HCH-amended samples, and Tomentella dominated in β-HCH and control rhizosphere samples but was lowest in δ-HCH samples.

The development of novel biomass carriers is an option for increasing the efficiency of processes at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Biomass carriers support the adhesion of specific bacteria and the subsequent biofilm formation. As part of this work, a new type of microfibrous biomass carrier with a unique sandwich structure was developed. Technologically, the structure of the biomass carrier is based on warp knitted spacer fabric created on a double-needle bar machine. Commercially available microfiber materials were used to achieve a large specific surface area (SSA) and internal porosity of the carrier to ensure high microorganism capture. A yarn combination was chosen to reach a final carrier density slightly lower than water to float in an aqueous environment. As the first, was developed and described a three-dimensional warp knitted microfiber biomass carrier. Next, were evaluated the properties of this carrier for post nitrification on WWTPs and compared with commercially available biomass carriers. Testing biofilm (using respirometry, real-time polymerase chain reaction, and next-generation sequencing) growing on the developed carrier in a post-nitrification laboratory reactor showed excellent adhesion, stability, and abundance of microorganisms. A high rate (more than 95%) of ammonia nitrogen removal was achieved in post-nitrification, and molecular genetics methods confirmed the high concentration of nitrifying bacteria in the biofilm. The developed three-dimensional microfiber biomass carriers have proven their functionality and can be considered an advance in biofilm processes.

The increased consumption, overuse, and subsequent difficult removal of pharmaceuticals using conventional processes lead to their rising prevalence in the environment. Adsorption belongs to the most efficient approaches to pharmaceuticals’ removal from wastewater. This study provides insight into the sorption properties of biochar, lignite, and polyamide nanofibers (PA-nanofibers) for sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, clarithromycin, azithromycin, and amoxicillin in ultrapure and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent water. The negative effect of WWTP effluent water was reflected in a reduction of the sorption capacity of biochar by 6.31–72.15%, 25.58–98.55% for lignite, and 4.21–67.71% for PA-nanofibers. Simultaneously, this study investigates the impact of the experimental setup. The sorption capacities were recorded in the range from 0.65 to 2.84 mg g−1 for biochar, 0.04 to 75.73 μg·g−1 for lignite, and 0.53 to 30.54 μg·g−1 for PA-nanofibers during the fixed-bed column tests with WWTP effluent water. Based on the results, biochar appears to be a suitable sorbent for selected pharmaceuticals in field conditions with running water. Lignite and PA represent complementary treatment technology or can act as a carrier for microbial degraders. Performed batch tests with ultrapure and WWTP effluent water and subsequent column tests highlighted the importance of conducting tests with the appropriate matrix and experimental setup to gain a realistic insight into the behavior of the sorbents under environmentally relevant conditions.
