Global plastic waste generation is about 300 million metric tons annually and poses crucial health and environmental problems. Africa is the second most polluted continent in the world, with over 500 shipping containers of waste being imported every month. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report suggests that about 75% of this plastic waste ends up in landfills. However, landfills management is associated with high environmental costs and loss of energy. In addition, landfill leachates end up in water bodies, are very detrimental to human health, and poison marine ecosystems. Therefore, it is imperative to explore eco-friendly techniques to transform plastic waste into valuable products in a sustainable environment. The trade-offs of using plastic waste for road construction and as a component in cementitious composites are discussed. The challenges and benefits of producing liquid fuels from plastic waste are also addressed. The recycling of plastic waste to liquid end-products was found to be a sustainable way of helping the environment with beneficial economic impact.

INTRODUCCIÓN. La crisis inducida por la pandemia de COVID-19 no solo ha desequilibrado el sistema de salud, también ha perturbado la dinámica global de generación de residuos, al punto, de modificar la composición y cantidad de desechos. Entre ellos, la generación a niveles insostenibles de residuos sanitarios, siendo los equipos de protección personal (EPP) como las mascarillas, los de mayor proporción. Así como, el aumento desmedido en la generación de residuos de envases de plástico y plásticos de un solo uso, como resultado de las compras en línea. Los que, sumados al sistema deficiente de gestión de residuos existente antes de la pandemia, amenaza con exacerbar aún más los problemas ambientales y de salud, especialmente en países en desarrollo. OBJETIVO. Identificar los principales desafíos globales, que supone el cambio en la dinámica de la generación de residuos, además de explorar soluciones innovadoras para su manejo pos pandémico y modificaciones viables en las prácticas existentes. MÉTODO. Mediante la técnica de análisis documental se recolectó información primaria, se sistematizó en fichas de registro de datos y se identificaron los principales retos que supone el cambio en la dinámica de la generación de residuos. RESULTADOS. La pandemia de COVID-19, viene generando una inmensa cantidad de desechos sanitarios y plásticos, que sumado a factores como el modelo de desarrollo y los patrones de producción y consumo, supone un enorme reto global para establecer un sistema de gestión de residuos sostenible pospandemia. DISCUSIÓN Y CONCLUSIONES. El cambio en la dinámica de la generación de desechos sanitarios y plásticos durante el COVID-19, ha agravado los problemas de la gestión de residuos sólidos. Por tanto, modificar las prácticas existentes y adoptar un sistema de gestión de residuos más eficiente, inclusivo y sostenible, son retos sustanciales que deben abordarse con suma urgencia para evitar efectos adversos en la salud y el ambiente.

This study considers a sustainable supply chain including the collector, cleaner, and recycler for recycling of PET plastic bottles and reusing them in textile industry. In the market, some suppliers of textile industry purchase cleaned and non-fragmented bottles and then they fragment them, whereas others prefer to buy recycled materials (i.e., cleaned and fragmented bottles). The collector collects used plastic bottles. To meet demand of the recycled materials, the collector transfers a portion of the collected bottles to the recycler and then the recycler cleans and fragments them. Furthermore, the collector cleans another portion of the collected bottles himself or via a cleaner to meet demand of the cleaned and non-fragmented bottles. In this setting, two different structures are established for transferring the cleaned bottles to suppliers. Under the first structure, the collector cleans the collected bottles through the cleaner by giving a share of the profit to him, while he is equipped with the bottles cleaning technology by paying a setup cost under the second structure. Moreover, the game-theoretic models are developed including Nash, Stackelberg, and Centralized to make decisions under two considered structures.
