Application of Molecular Methods in the Identification of Ingredients in Chinese Herbal Medicines

Abstract: There are several kinds of Chinese herbal medicines originating from diverse sources. However, the rapid taxonomic identification of large quantities of Chinese herbal medicines is difficult using traditional methods, and the process of identification itself is prone to error. Therefore, the traditional methods of Chinese herbal medicine identification must meet higher standards of accuracy. With the rapid development of bioinformatics, methods relying on bioinformatics strategies offer advantages with respect… Show more

“…Therefore, the mechanism of action of the drugs can be inferred by analyzing the different factors or proteins, and the drug target can be confirmed. 89 , 90 For example, Wei et al. 91 explored the target of Baixiangdan capsule in regulating premenstrual anxiety disorder based on gene transcription level and analyzed the differential gene expression profiles of the hippocampus in each experimental group by gene chip technology, and the real-time fluorescence quantitative detection results were consistent with the data shown in GeneChip, which confirmed the effective target gene of Baixiangdan capsule.…”

“…The results of organoleptic, macroscopic, and microscopic analyses, as well as a chemical analytical assessment of the raw plant materials, were referenced in the Monograph of Pharmacopoeias to determine the botanical origins of the crude drugs. Moreover, molecular analysis has been successfully used in the species-level identification of several herbal medicines over the latest decade [ 13 , 14 , 15 ].…”

“…In ChP, molecular identification has been used for the identification of Dendrobii Caulis, Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus, Agkistrodon, Bungarus Parvus and Zaocys. Among various molecular identification techniques, molecular DNA barcoding has been increasingly studied recently [ 70 , 71 ]. The core of this advanced technique is to assess the sequence variations of one or several commonly recognized, relatively short DNA sequences in the genome of the samples for the identification and authentication of herbal drugs.…”
