Application of Modified Log-Wake Law in Open-Channels

Abstract: The modified log-wake law, which was developed for turbulent boundary layers and pipe flows, is extended to turbulent flows in open-channels. Turbulent velocity profiles in open-channels can be approximated with three components: (1) the law of the wall that results from the constant bed shear stress; (2) the law of the wake that reflects the effects of gravity, secondary currents and bed roughness; and (3) the cubic correction near the maximum velocity. A procedure to determine the four model parameters from … Show more

“…Even in the large river like the Mississippi River, the maximum velocity appears at two-third of the water depth from the channel bottom (Gordon 1992). From many experimental results and analysis it is widely accepted that at the central section of any open channel the velocitydip-phenomenon occurs if the aspect ratio of the channel Ar (defined as the ratio of channel width b to flow depth h), is less than a certain value, called the critical aspect ratio Arc (Nezu and Rodi 1985;Hu and Hui 1995;Guo and Julien 2008;Guo 2013;Kundu and Ghoshal 2013). From their experimental observations Nezu and Rodi (1985) proposed that Arc ≈ 5.…”

“…The method will fail if no satisfactory tangential parabola be obtained. Later, Guo and Julien (2008) describes a method to determine the dip position by fitting a parabola to the velocity data near the free surface region.…”

“…Sarma et al (2000) proposed a binary law for the velocity distribution in an open channel which is a combination of the logarithmic law for the inner region and the parabolic law for the outer region. Guo and Julien (2008) proposed a modified log-wake law to fit the velocity distribution for flow with dip-phenomenon. Yang et al (2004) proposed a methodology to estimate the Reynolds shear stress distribution and velocity dip phenomenon in a smooth open channel.…”

“…In natural channels the flow is three dimensional due to the presence of secondary currents and the measured maximum velocity occurs below the surface and this is called the velocity dip phenomenon (Guo andJulien 2008 andGuo 2014). A Modified Log-Wake Law (MLWL) is proposed by Guo and Julien (2003) and Guo et al (2005) which is applicable to velocity data measured in both pipe and open channel flow in laboratory and field.…”
