Purpose The prevention through design (PtD) concept has been widely recognized as one of the most effective approaches to eliminate or reduce construction site hazards. It encourages engineers and architects to consider occupational safety and health during the planning and design phases. Nevertheless, the implementation of PtD is often inhibited because designers lack adequate knowledge about construction safety and the construction process, and limited design-for-safety tools and procedures are available for designers to use. The purpose of this paper is to provide designers a tool for assessing construction risks during early phases of multistory building projects at an activity level and on a daily basis in a 4D environment. By using the tool, proactive measures could be taken in the design and planning phase to reduce site hazards. Design/methodology/approach The proposed method consists of four steps including risk quantification at a design element level, 4D model integration with risk values, risk assessment, and design alternative selection and model acceptance. A case study was carried out to test and verify the proposed method. Findings The proposed tool has the capability to assess the safety risk for an entire multistory project and visualize safety risk in a particular time period, work space and task prior to construction. It benefits designers in conducting risk assessments and selecting design alternatives concerning safety. Contractors could also utilize the visualization and simulation results of the 4D model for site safety planning so that a range of risk mitigation strategies could be implemented during construction. Originality/value The study provides an innovative PtD tool targeting designers as primary end-users. The proposed tool helps designers assess construction risks and has potential to incorporate the top levels of the hierarchy of risk controls.

A indústria 4.0 estabelece a conexão entre as pessoas e a tecnologia, visando a automação dos processos industriais. Na construção civil, sua implementação mostra-se como benefício para melhorias das práticas construtivas, de forma a utilizar um aplicativo para o gerenciamento das práticas e atividades em uma obra. Assim, este artigo descreve o desenvolvimento de um aplicativo móvel para automação e melhoria no processo de registro do controle de qualidade do concreto. A metodologia desse estudo foi dividida em três partes: (1) Revisão bibliográfica; (2) Pesquisa exploratória com aplicação de questionário com gerentes de obras; e (3) Desenvolvimento de funcionalidade de aplicativo móvel para controle de qualidade do concreto. A partir disso, obteve-se um sistema, nas versões Mobile e Web, capaz de prover maior produtividade para mão-de-obra responsável pela fiscalização e controle da qualidade do concreto de forma automatizada, substituindo o uso de formulários em papel e reduzindo a probabilidade de erro humano.

Extending BIM Interoperability for Real-Time Concrete Formwork Process Monitoring

The concrete formwork process is a critical component of construction project control because failing to gain the necessary concrete strength can lead to reworks and, consequently, project delays and cost overruns during the project’s execution. The goal of this study is to develop a novel method of monitoring the maturity of concrete and providing reduced formwork removal time with the strength ensured in real-time. This method addresses the wireless sensors and building information modeling (BIM) needed to help project management personnel monitor the concrete’s status and efficiently decide on the appropriate formwork removal timing. Previous studies have focused only on the monitoring of concrete’s status using sensor data or planning the formwork layout by integrating the BIM environment into the design process. This study contributes to extending BIM’s interoperability for monitoring concrete’s maturity in real-time during construction, as well as determining the formwork removal time for project control. A case study was conducted at a building construction project to validate the developed framework. It was concluded that BIM can interoperate with the data collected from sensors embedded in concrete, and that this system can reduce formwork removal time while retaining sufficient strength in the concrete, rather than adhering to the removal time given in building code standards.
