The recovery of waste materials with potential for synthetic transformations is a major field in science. However, just few experiments have been devoted to undergraduate students by exploring some consistent subjects in light of simple, natural resources. Nucleophilicity is a central subject in chemistry and there are significant synthetic models to exploit it in contrast to basicity. Here we present a laboratory experiment that utilizes hands-on research to be implemented in an organic chemistry lab by using benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) from papaya seeds as raw material for the preparation of thioureas in a fast and visually indicative experiment. Subjects such as green chemistry, extraction methods, nucleophilicity, chromatography and NMR spectroscopy can be emphasized in order to implement a project-based approach. This experiment shows flexibility concerning the procedures and the use of biomass raw materials towards the reinforcement of a research-like experience and critical-thinking skills.

Precious metals which include the platinum group, gold, and silver, play indispensable roles in high technology industries of the modern world due to their outstanding physical and chemical properties. As a result of diminishing availability of mineral sources, increasing demand, and environmental concerns, the recovery of precious metals from both leaching and industrial waste solutions is becoming a very important technology. Magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) is a technique that has received substantial consideration in the separation and recovery of precious metals because of the many advantages it offers compared to conventional methods. This technique is based on the extraction of different analytes from solutions using solid adsorbents with magnetic properties. This review focuses on different types of magnetic adsorbents, the main procedures used for synthesis, characterization and their application in precious metals recovery based on recently published literatures.

Specific recognition of ultratrace levels of ions in semi-water using super-quicker methods is still a challenge for environmental monitoring. Herein we report a fluorescent and colormetric sensor (ZH) based on supramolecular self-assembly, whose structure was destroyed by the addition of ultratrace of silver ions. The process promoted either naked eye visible color changes or fluorescence intensity quenched in conjunction with a wide pH range. Systematic studies revealed very high selectivity (0.07 μmol/L) for silver ions, and other common cations, e.g., Hg 2＋ , Cu 2＋ , Cd 2＋ , Pb 2＋ had nearly no influence on the sensing behavior. This sensor also served as a multiple use of component in sensing materials by addition of I  into the mixture of ZH and Ag ＋ (about 5 times). What's more, ZH containing filter paper emerged distinct color and fluorescence changes upon exposure to silver (Ag ＋ ), which could be used as a portable method to undertake field testing for Ag ＋ .
