Application of LIBS in Detection of Antihyperglycemic Trace Elements in Momordica charantia

Abstract: The present study exploits the information based on concentration of trace elements and minerals in understanding the role/mechanism of action of freezedried fruit powder suspended in distilled water of Momordica charantia (family: Cucurbitaceae) in diabetes treatment. Laser-induced break down spectroscopy (LIBS) spectra of plant product was recorded under optimized experimental conditions and analyzed. Several atomic lines such as Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Al, etc. have been observed in the LIBS spectra of the above… Show more

“…This activity includes studies of laser ablation and properties of the laser spark, the development of methods to enhance LIBS detection capabilities, and the application of LIBS to specific analysis needs. Recently Watal's research group has been successfully applied LIBS technique for the analysis of trace elements in medicinal plants [6][7][8][9] , responsible for their specific bioactivities.…”

“…Recently, Rai et al 112 used LIBS technique for the elemental study of Momordica charantia which is a medicinal herb and commonly known as bitter gourd (melon) or "Karela." The authors used CF-LIBS to quantify the elements like Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe and Al present in the dried fruit pellet of M. charantia.…”

“…Bitter gourd has also been frequently used as a medicinal herb in Asia, Africa, and South America because of its antidiabetic, anthelmintic, abortifacient, antibacterial, antiviral, and chemopreventive functions [74, 75]. In addition, freeze-dried M. charantia powder was found to have antidiabetic activity [26]. LIBS spectrum of the freeze-dried M. charantia fruit powder was recorded to identify its glycemic trace elements that may be responsible for diabetes management in biological systems.…”

“…The concentrations of these elements were determined by calibration-free (CF)-LIBS method. This approach requires extensive data processing and, hence, a data processing algorithm was developed [76] to quantify the effect of different CF parameters using a code in MATLAB [26]. …”
