Application of iterative blind deconvolution to the reconstruction of LBT LINC-NIRVANA images

Abstract: Context. The paper is about methods for multiple image deconvolution and their application to the reconstruction of the images acquired by the Fizeau interferometer, denoted LINC-NIRVANA, under development for the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). The multiple images of the same target are obtained with different orientations of the baseline. Aims. To propose and develop a blind method for dealing with cases where no knowledge or very poor knowledge of the point spread functions (PSF) is available. Methods. The… Show more

“…The constraint is applied before the reconstruction algorithm used to update the PSF, so that it can be used together with others constraints (an example is the constraint on the Fourier support of the PSF given in Desiderà et al 2006) and/or within different kind of blind deconvolution algorithms (Jefferies & Christou 1993;Ayers 1988;Holmes 1992;Tsumuraya et al 1994;Fisch et al 1995;Biggs & Andrews 1998).…”

“…IBD structure As described in Desiderà et al (2006), the IBD method used in this study restores the object and the PSF separately in an iterative form: within each global iteration, which we will call a "cycle", either the object or the PSF is kept fixed while the other is updated. Therefore the output of each cycle updates both the object (within the so-called object box) and the PSF (within the PSF box), as provided by the previous one.…”

“…As a final experiment, we attempted an improvement of the result by means of the iterative blind deconvolution (IBD) method we recently implemented and tested (Desiderà et al 2006). As a byproduct we have recognized that an improvement of this method may be convenient: it consists in introducing a constraint on the SR of the PSFs in the PSF boxes and it will be described in detail in forthcoming papers.…”

“…This problem is closely related to the blind deconvolution one (Desidera et al 2006;Lantéri et al 1994) and consists in estimating W and H, nonnegative, such that V ≈ WH. The aim New Concepts in Imaging: Optical and Statistical Models of this paper is to propose a unified framework based on SGM, an interior-point algorithm, to derive algorithms for NMF, in a multiplicative form or not.…”
