Application of Internal Olefin Sulfonates and Other Surfactants to EOR. Part 2: The Design and Execution of an ASP Field Test

Abstract: This paper discusses the design and application of an alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) system for the West Salym field in West Siberia. The discussion in the paper focuses on surfactant selection, and less on polymer selection. The optimum surfactant system for the West Salym crude is a combination of IOS 24-28 (internal olefin sulfonate with a tail length of 24-28 C-atoms) and IOS 15-18 and also includes an alcohol as co-solvent. The IOS surfactants are manufactured commercially by Shell Chemicals as the ENO… Show more

“…Ten oilfield reactive tracer tests from five literature sources indicate some common challenges in tracer tests (Sheely, 1978;Bragg et al, 1978;Causin et al, 1990;Romero et al, 2011;Buijse et al, 2010). Five tests experienced low recovery of the tracer from the reservoir (Sheely, 1978;Bragg et al, 1978;Causin et al, 1990;Romero et al, 2011).…”

“…However residual gas will occupy the centres of the largest pores and so injected water in the residual saturation test will flow more into smaller pores, which are not likely to be as well connected and would increase dispersivity. However, the assumption of constant dispersivity seems to have been used in Buijse et al (2010) to interpret well tests to prior and after removal of a residual oil saturation with good results.…”

“…Especially the LTS-18 was considered for steam applications Buijse et al 2010). The alcohol alkoxy sulfate (AAS) J1111, however, can retain its properties for up to 60°C reservoir condition and can be used as an additive for hot water injection.…”

“…It is crucial that the surfactant forms a three-phase system (middle phase microemulsion) when it is injected into the reservoir to achieve the very low interfacial tension. This is because the lowest interfacial tension is achieved when a middle phase microemulsion is formed (Hirasaki et al 2011;Buijse et al 2010).…”
