Paper deals with application of geotextile ropes in erosion protection of slope of gravel pit in Nieboczowy, Poland. For protection of the slope the segments formed from thick ropes were applied. The ropes with the diameter of 120 mm were produced by the Kemafil technology. Ropes were made from strips of stitch-bonded nonwoven produced from a mixture of recycled natural and synthetic fibres and strips of wool needle-punched nonwoven. The protected slope had the length of 4 to 6 m, slope inclination from 1:1 to 1:1.8 and total area of approximately 150 m2. It will be shown that installed ropes restrain soil so there is no slope failure in protected section even in case of low soil shear strength parameters and unfavourable hydraulic conditions. Generally slope surface in protected section is without rills and gullies. This case also shows that plants are very good anti-erosion measure. Thanks ropes installed on the slope, favourable conditions for plants growth are created and maintained.

Influence of soil specimen preparation on results of its organic matter content laboratory determination

Paper deals with influence of soil specimen preparation on values of its organic matter content, determined by laboratory tests. Totally 54 specimens of soils CG, CL, CI and CH from Lipnik, Międzyrzecze and Nieboczowy, Poland were tested. To obtain values of soils organic matter content, the oxidation method introduced in the Polish Standard PN-88/B-04481 was applied. The tests were carried out for particles smaller than 2 mm. For every sample, 3 specimens (every with a mass about 10 g of dry soil) were prepared by such a way that the first one is taken from whole sample after drying about 200 g of wet soil. The second and third one were taken from 50 g of remaining sample mass after taking the first one. As an oxidizing agent, the 30% hydrogen peroxide solution was used. The results show that values of organic matter content of soils range from 0.03% to 2.74%. The largest difference in values of organic matter content, caused by specimen preparation, was 0.38% (absolute difference), corresponding to relative difference 15.86%. The smallest difference was null. Mentioned difference causes negligible difference in soil erodibility factor K hence negligible difference in soil erosion rate in mentioned locations.

Abstract:Environmental protection has become an increasing concern, which makes recycling and reclaiming highly important. In addition to governmental campaigns and promotion, enterprises should examine each perspective thoroughly in order to prevent excessive resource consumption. In this study, recycled materials, including recycled far-infrared polyester (FPET) fiber, three-dimensional crimped hollow flame-retarding (TPET) fiber, and low-melting-point polyester (LPET) fiber, are used to form nonwoven fabrics. The influence of different amounts of FPET fiber, 0-80 wt %, on the properties of nonwoven fabrics was examined. The sheath of LPET fibers can be melted as a result of hot pressing, which provides cohesion between fibers that mechanically improves the nonwoven fabrics. The tensile strength, tearing strength, air permeability, and far infrared (FIR) emissivity of the nonwoven fabrics were examined, thereby determining the optimal parameters. The test results show that the thermally treated nonwoven fabrics have better mechanical properties and FIR emissivity, compared to those of non-thermally treated nonwoven fabrics. Moreover, more FPET fibers cause the mechanical properties along the cross machine direction (CD) to decrease by 9% and that along the machine direction (MD) to decrease by 5%. In particular, all the thermally treated samples exhibit a FIR emissivity of 0.8, which is health-promoting.
