Application of inline imaging for monitoring crystallization process in a continuous oscillatory baffled crystallizer

Abstract: In this study, an in situ imaging system has been analysed to characterize the crystal size, the shape and the number of particles during a continuous crystallization process in a Continuous Oscillatory Baffled Crystallizer (COBC). Two image analysis approaches were examined for particle characterization in the suspension containing both small nuclei and larger grown crystals (nonspherical and irregular in shape). The pattern matching approach, in which the particles are approximated to be spherical, did resul… Show more

“…Besides, it can also identify a series of phenomena in the crystallization process, 149 namely, nucleation, growth, polymorphic transformation, agglomeration, breakage, and oiling out. Kacker et al 150 established an online imaging system to represent the particle size distribution and the crystal shape during the crystallization process in a COBC. The image analysis probe gave results similar to those of the FBRM measurements.…”

“…Other variants are image-giving inline probes, which have been developed and established in the last twenty years [12,[41][42][43][44][45]. These common incident-light probes are inserted into the reactor, acquiring the information at the point of interest.…”

“…However, in the traditional stirred tank crystallizer, the flow field distribution is not uniform even under the optimum conditions, typically because the turbulence intensity alters greatly as the size of the tank increases [9]. The oscillatory flow reactor combines the flow control of pulse oscillation with internal geometries to achieve effective control of the mixing and heat transfer process [10,11], which has potential applications in crystallization [8,[12][13][14][15][16].…”
