Application of High-Resolution MALDI-TOFMS with a Spiral Ion Trajectory for the Structural Characterization of Free Radical Polymerized Methacrylate Ester Copolymers

Abstract: The structural characterization of copolymers by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) remains a challenging task, since their random comonomer distribution creates very complicated mass spectra. In this study, a high-resolution TOF mass spectrometer with a spiral ion trajectory was applied to the structural and compositional characterization of free radical copolymerized poly(methyl methacrylate-co-tert-butyl methacrylate), poly(MMA-co-tBMA)s in ethyl lacta… Show more

“…17 m ight path (JMS-S3000, JEOL, Tokyo, Japan). [15][16][17] e ionization was carried out with Nd:YLF laser (349 nm) in 0.5 ns pulse width and mainly 250 Hz frequency. Ions generated by the laser desorption were introduced into the ight tube with an accelerating voltage of 20 kV and separated in a positive spiral mode.…”

“…Therefore, we utilized a JMS-S3000 Spiral-TOF with the same MALDI ionization method and a spiral ion trajectory of 17 m to improve the resolution and accuracy of TOF. 15 Second, in terms of the sodium adduct ions, contamination by extraneous sodium ions, such as from scientific glassware, different measurement samples (steroids) and the derivatization reagent (DNPH), could be a problem. Third, DNPH and 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid hydrazide could be thought to possess different activities as reactive matrices in MALDI-MS.…”

“…This can be overcome using a new type of high-resolution TOFMS instrument with a spiral ion trajectory (spiral-TOFMS) in which the long flight path of the ions along the spiral ion trajectory of approximately 17 m (2.1 m  8 turns) gives a high mass-resolving power of 80 000 at full width at half maximum for m/z 2564 of a peptide sample. 19 MALDI spiral-TOFMS, which has easily succeeded in separating adjacent peaks (D 0.036 Da) of copolymers up to m/z 3000 20 will be useful for structure assignment of individual mycolic acids.…”
