Application of Headspace Thin-Film Solid-Phase Microextraction for Volatile Analysis in Red Wine

Abstract

The thin-film solid-phase microextraction (TF-SPME) technique is the latest advancement in volatile extraction. A thin film is a carbon mesh sheet (typically 20 mm × 4.7 mm) covered with a sorptive phase, which can be used in headspace (HS) or immersion mode. In this study, HS-TF-SPME was evaluated for volatile analysis in Pinot Noir. The extraction efficiency of three different polymeric phases (hydrophilic–lipophilic balanced/poly­(dimethylsiloxane) (HLB/PDMS), divinylbenzene (DVB)/PDMS, and carboxen (CAR)/PDMS) thin films was compared to that of the well-established DVB/PDMS and ethylene glycol (EG)/PDMS stir bar extraction. The results showed that the thin film with the hydrophilic–lipophilic balanced HLB/PDMS had a higher extraction efficiency and sensitivity for most volatile compounds. Good correlation coefficients (R 2 ranged from 0.9919 to 0.9999) were obtained for the volatile compounds analyzed with a wide concentration range. Recovery for the analyzed volatiles ranged from 80 to 141% in the wine matrix. HS-TF (HLB/PDM)-SPME was successfully applied to three commercial red wine volatile analyses with less than 20% standard deviation.
