Application of grid convergence index to shock wave validated with LS-DYNA and ProsAir

Abstract: The discretization error is not always calculated, even though it is essential for the studies of computational solid mechanics. However, it is well known that an error committed by the mesh used can be as large as the measured variable, which greatly invalidates the results obtained. The grid convergence index (GCI) method makes possible to determine on a solid basis, the order of convergence and the asymptotic solution. This method seems to be a suitable estimator despite further research is needed in the co… Show more

“…Users can see how big of an error that might be making and where it might fall inside the error band. While low GCI values indicate that the computational solution is close to the asymptotic on the mesh size, this also demonstrates how much the solution will vary when the mesh size is refined [30], [31]- [32]. If the solution is already good enough, making the mesh smaller will not make it much different.…”

“…In numerical studies, the estimation of the discretization error is a transcendental part since it determines the fit and agreement of the numerical results with the experimental data [40]. Computer software packages can solve a set of differential or integral equations that describe the physical phenomenon that governs the analyzed situation.…”

“…The three-dimensional blast simulation program ProSAir, a compressible CFD package, was used to collect maximum overpressure and impulse values at various locations of the protruded structural façade. This package has been validated against experimental data and is widely used for blast load modeling (Alterman et al, 2019; Castedo et al, 2019; Remennikov and Rose, 2005). Detailed information on the underlying computational equations and assumptions for ProSAir can be found on the Cranfield University website (ProSAir computational blast loading tool, 2022).…”
