Application of Gas Sensor Arrays in Assessment of Wastewater Purification Effects

Abstract: A gas sensor array consisting of eight metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) type gas sensors was evaluated for its ability for assessment of the selected wastewater parameters. Municipal wastewater was collected in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in a primary sedimentation tank and was treated in a laboratory-scale sequential batch reactor (SBR). A comparison of the gas sensor array (electronic nose) response to the standard physical-chemical parameters of treated wastewater was performed. To analyze the measur… Show more

“…First of all, they can be used in medicine as markers for determination of the presence of different diseases like cancer (Turner, 2013). As markers of the presence of some substances, VOCs can also be a useful tool for verification in industry (James, Scott, Zulfiqur, & O'Hare, 2005), environmental research (Bieganowski et al, 2018;Guz et al, 2015), medicine (Zhou, Luo, GholamHosseini, Li, & He, 2017), and even in military applications (Patel, 2014). Analyses of VOCs have been widely used to determine the quality of biomaterials (Ayari, Mirzaee-Ghaleh, Rabbani, & Heidarbeigi, 2018;Zhang, Cheng, Ma, & Li, 2017).…”

“…Sensor arrays or electronic noses (e‐noses) have been developed for a wide variety of applications, including discrimination between and detection of specific ingredients in food and beverage industries, wastewater assessment, disease diagnosis, and chemical process analysis . Sensor arrays combine multiple sensing materials into one sensor.…”

“…Sensor arrays combine multiple sensing materials into one sensor. The response from each of the sensing materials is incorporated into some algorithm (often an artificial neural network), which analyzes all of the data and provides an output where specific analytes are identified . For an effective sensor array, both the algorithm and the sensing materials are important.…”

“…All systems have a particular application and to achieve the best treatment effect, must have a sufficiently large volume of reactors bear the operating costs associated with a complex system of recycling and maintenance of pumps or proper decantation system in case of sequence batch reactors as well as system for measurement and control [21][22][23][24][25].…”
