Application of Fuzzy Logic to Cognitive Radio Systems

Abstract: SUMMARYThis paper reviews applications of fuzzy logic to telecommunications and proposes a novel fuzzy combining scheme for cooperative spectrum sensing in cognitive radio systems. A summary of previous applications of fuzzy logic to telecommunications is given outlining also potential applications of fuzzy logic in future cognitive radio systems. In complex and dynamic operational environments, future cognitive radio systems will need sophisticated decision making and environment awareness techniques that are… Show more

“…Alternatively different from the above approaches researchers have tried to solve this limitation of energy detector by adopting soft decision method using Fuzzy logic [18,27,19,20,9] as there is great deal of ambiguity, uncertainty or fuzziness in the 'confused region' as shown in Figure 1 for a cooperative sensing scenario. The disadvantages cooperative based sensing are the increased hardware overhead as well as sensing latency.…”

“…On the other hand, several research works have promoted the usage of specific analytical tools to assist in cognitive management functionalities for spectrum management by exploiting different forms of cognition of the radio environment. Some examples of the most popular criteria of cognition considered in the literature are reinforcement learning [8,9], Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) [10][11][12], fuzzy logic tools [13] and game theory solutions [14,15].…”

“…A fuzzy decision chooses the most appropriate access opportunity by using cross-layer information, past history, and shared knowledge among different devices through a knowledge base. Cognitive spectrum sensing based on fuzzy logic was presented in [12]. This approach provides good sensing performance and high flexibility for decision combining at the fusion center.…”
