Application of four sets of tectonomagmatic discriminant function based diagrams to basic rocks from northwest Mexico

Abstract: Discrimination diagrams are being widely used for the past four decades to infer the tectonomagmatic affiliation of old rocks. There are several major-and trace-element composition based bivariate, ternary and multi-element discriminant function diagrams in the literature. Recent evaluation of the performance of these diagrams indicates that four sets of recent discriminant function based diagrams, in which the tectonic boundaries are determined from probability estimates for four tectonic settings of island a… Show more

“…The existing diagrams have been extensively used and tested in the original articles (Verma et al, 2006bAgrawal et al, 2008;Verma and Agrawal, 2011;, as well as in numerous papers (e.g., Sheth, 2008;Van Kranendonk and Sonntag, 2012;Pandarinath and Verma, 2013;Polat, 2013;Verma, 2013;Oliveira, 2013, 2014;Pandarinath, 2014aPandarinath, , 2014bVelascoTapia, 2014;. Nevertheless, more work is still needed to fill the gap in these new, efficient, and statistically coherent geochemical tools for better elucidating geological processes.…”

“…The respective DF1ÀDF2 equations are summarized in Tables S2 and S3. These diagrams have been successfully evaluated by several authors, such as Sheth (2008), Bailie and Rajesh (2012), Polat et al (2009), Polat (2013, Pandarinath (2014), Pandarinath and Verma (2013), Verma and Oliveira (2013), Verma (2009Verma ( , 2012bVerma ( , 2013, .…”

“…These multi-dimensional diagrams have been positively evaluated and used by the original authors as well as several workers (e.g., Rajesh, 2007;Sheth, 2008;Aparicio and García, 2009;Polat et al, 2009aPolat et al, , 2009bPolat et al, , 2011Ramakrishnan, 2009;Verma, 2009Verma, , 2010Verma, , 2012bBailie et al, 2010Bailie et al, , 2012Slovenec et al, 2010;Wang et al, 2010;Zhang et al, 2010;Pandarinath and Verma, 2013;. Importantly, the proposal of these newer diagrams Agrawal et al, 2008;Verma and Agrawal, 2011) and their use fully complies with the statistical requirements for handling compositional data (Aitchison, 1986;Agrawal and Verma, 2007;Verma, 2012a).…”
