Currently, outdoor navigation systems have widely been used around the world on smartphones. They rely on GPS (Global Positioning System). However, indoor navigation systems are still under development due to the complex structure of indoor environments, including multiple floors, many rooms, steps, and elevators. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of the Indoor Navigation System using Unity and Smartphone (INSUS). INSUS shows the arrow of the moving direction on the camera view based on a smartphone’s augmented reality (AR) technology. To trace the user location, it utilizes the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technique with a gyroscope and a camera in a smartphone to track users’ movements inside a building after initializing the current location by the QR code. Unity is introduced to obtain the 3D information of the target indoor environment for Visual SLAM. The data are stored in the IoT application server called SEMAR for visualizations. We implement a prototype system of INSUS inside buildings in two universities. We found that scanning QR codes with the smartphone perpendicular in angle between 60∘ and 100∘ achieves the highest QR code detection accuracy. We also found that the phone’s tilt angles influence the navigation success rate, with 90∘ to 100∘ tilt angles giving better navigation success compared to lower tilt angles. INSUS also proved to be a robust navigation system, evidenced by near identical navigation success rate results in navigation scenarios with or without disturbance. Furthermore, based on the questionnaire responses from the respondents, it was generally found that INSUS received positive feedback and there is support to improve the system.

Many key applications in Cyber-Physical Systems require the transmission of speech, audio, or video. These scenarios involve the use of traditional Real-Time Communication (RTC) protocols and technologies, which cannot always be used in the context of core networks. This is particularly critical in the context of Event-Driven Architectures (EDAs), where RTC protocols require the use of complex topologies that rely on costly infrastructure. One way to avoid this is by encapsulating all media traffic in EDA protocols. However, this approach does not come without challenges. Specifically, the nature of the transport protocols causes the media to be heavily affected by application layer impairments that render their usage highly impractical. To prevent this from happening, this paper introduces a unified scheme that supports the efficient encapsulation of media traffic in EDA scenarios. This is accomplished through a mechanism that relies on a Machine Learning (ML) model that is exercised in an experimental framework.

While most Internet of Things (IoT) solutions involve sensing, some of them also introduce actuation mechanisms. Specifically, devices interact with assets in the environment and transmit sensor readouts to applications that perform analytics. These applications typically reside on the network core and, in turn, process the readouts that trigger the transmission of actuation commands to the device. One important issue in these schemes is the nature of the communication channels. Most devices are wireless and therefore they are affected by the effects of signal multipath fading that results in application loss. More importantly, these impairments may cause actuation commands to be lost or to be critically delayed. In this context, several standard mechanisms have been proposed for the transmission of traffic from the application to the devices. They fall under two main architectural categories: (1) Representational State Transfer (REST) and (2) Event Driven Architecture (EDA). In this paper, we analyze two protocols associated with each of these two architectures by comparing them in order to assess their efficiency in IoT actuation solutions. This analysis leads to the development of a mathematical model that enables the dynamic selection of the right technology based on network impairments.
