Hexavalent chromium, emanating primarily from the electroplating industries, can be reduced to the less toxic trivalent variety by several methods, including emulsion liquid membrane (ELM). In this work, studies on the continuous removal of chromium from authentic electroplating wastewater by ELM are reported. The effects of treat ratio, external feed phase, and stripping agent concentration were examined. A mathematical boundary breakage model was used to study the extraction efficiency of chromium through the ELM process. The model representing the prediction of ELM extraction performance for chromium was validated through the comparison between the simulation and experimental results. The result showed the simulation model is found to be in good agreement with the experimental result. Almost 100% of 40 ppm chromium in the external feed phase was extracted within 3 to 5 min using 0.022 M TOMAC as extractant, 1.0 M acidic thiourea in the internal phase, and 1 to 5 of treat ratio. © 2021 Water Environment Federation • Practitioner Points• Hexavalent chromium, emanating primarily from electroplating industries, can be reduced to the less toxic trivalent using ELM process. • The developed method was tested for its applicability with predominant species of Cr 2 O 7 2− in real rinse electroplating wastewater. • The extraction efficiency (%) of Cr (VI) was almost 100% for 40 ppm Cr in the external feed phase within 3 to 5 min. • The result showed the simulation model is found to be in good agreement with the experimental result.

Perak adalah logam yang digunakan secara luas dalam berbagai industri, meliputi fotografi (bahan dasar film dan kertas foto), elektronik, perhiasan, campuran logam (alloy) penghambat korosi, dan sebagainya sampai keskala laboratorium. Kandungan perak dalam limbah sebesar lebih dari 2000 mg/Lyang berpotensi menyebabkan toksisitas lingkungan dan kesehatan bagi makhluk hidup. Oleh karena itu, perlu dilakukan pemisahan logam perak dalam limbah dengan metode Emulsion Liquid Membrane (ELM) dengan campuran pembawa D2EHPA-TBP yang memiliki efektivitas dan selektivitas yang tinggi terhadap ion logam Ag. Produk perak yang didapatkan sebagai penyedia perak kedua. Hasil yang didapatkan dengan penggunaan pembawa D2EHPA-TBP lebih efektif untuk mengambil perak dari limbah daripada larutan Ag+. Pembawa D2EHPA-TBP menggunakan perak tiosulfat (sinergi) relatif selektif daripada Cu(II) dan Cr(VI) dengan persen pengambilan perak sebesar 94,93%.Kata Kunci: ELM; Logam Perak; selektif; D2EHPA

A simultaneous extraction study of lead, copper, and cadmium from diluted aqueous solution through Emulsion Liquid Membrane (ELM) technique was conducted and extensive investigations of the impact of the pH of the feed phase, homogenizer speed, surfactant (Span 80) and carrier (D2EHPA) concentrations, and ratio of external to membrane phase on the system stability (breakage) and removal efficiencies of Pb2+, Cu2+,Cd2+ ions were experimentally carried out. Kerosene was used as the membrane and stabilized by Sorbitan monooleate (Span 80) as the emulsifier. Bis-2-Ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as an extractant and H2SO4 as a reagent (internal phase) were utilized. Lead, Copper, and Cadmium extraction efficiencies of 100%, 100%, and 98% were obtained respectively under specific operating conditions. The emulsion stability of the system was studied, and breakage of 1.8% under the best operating condition was obtained. High reagent (H2SO4) concentration (0.5 M) maintained the simultaneous extraction of the three heavy metals (lead, copper, and cadmium) and minimizes the probable interaction and competing mechanism between them in the extraction stage.
