Application of EMD-WVD and particle filter for gearbox fault feature extraction and remaining useful life prediction

Abstract: Fault feature extraction and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction are important to condition based maintenance (CBM). In order to realize the fault feature extraction of gearbox vibration signal presenting nonlinear and non-Gaussian, the integration of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) are proposed in this paper. Taking the kurtosis as standard, the WVD is applied to some IMFs with larger kurtosis to calculate the time-frequency distribution, with an effective suppress on… Show more

“…However, spectrum leakage under variable speeds is a major drawback of time-domain and frequency-domain analyses. To overcome these drawbacks, Ni et al 7 and Liu et al 8 applied fault frequency band energy selected by time–frequency domain analysis to gearbox condition monitoring. However, investigated methods discussed in these literatures were mainly suitable for conventional gearboxes, not for WT gearboxes considering their high reliability, complicated load, and long service life requirement.…”

“…WD was applied to the field of signal analysis and processing by Ville in 1947, and then developed into a representative bilinear time-frequency analysis method, known as Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD). It had a good time-frequency resolution in [ 9 ]. In fact, results of WVD will be affected by false information caused by cross interference terms.…”

“…An alternative has recently been proposed by many scholars which is based on the random filtering theory. Additionally, a random degradation model is usually been established to predict the RUL and guarantee the reliability of reducers [15][16][17]. Teng et al [18] extracted the vibration signal features of full-cycle data on a gearbox and predicted the RUL using the Hidden Markov Model.…”
