Application of embolization microspheres in interventional therapy of malignant non-hypervascular tumor of liver

Abstract: ObjectiveTo investigate the efficacy and safety of transarterial embolization (TAE) using embolization microspheres in the treatment of non-hypervascular malignant liver tumors.MethodsPatients with malignant non-hypervascular liver tumors, who were treated with TAE using embolization microspheres, were selected and analyzed retrospectively. The technical success rate, tumor response, and complications were assessed.ResultsSix patients were included in the study: 1 patient each with hepatocellular-cholangiocarc… Show more

“…It is worth noting that any foreign object circulating in the blood, including the drug delivery system, is a potential embolus and, therefore, under certain conditions, it can block the microvessels causing an embolism and forcing subsequent changes in the tissues (ischemia and necrosis) as a result of circulatory disorders. , This can be used as a cancer treatment strategy. For instance, large micron-sized particles can be injected through the vessels supplying blood to the organ, where they block the microvessels causing irreversible changes in the tumor tissue …”

“…For instance, large micron-sized particles can be injected through the vessels supplying blood to the organ, where they block the microvessels causing irreversible changes in the tumor tissue. 1 However, the cardiovascular system has mechanisms that can redistribute blood flow and thereby regulate the blood flow in tissues and organs. 39,44 Ordinarily, only the part of the capillary vessels in the organism is supplied with the blood and the other ones are closed with sphincters.…”

“…Thirteen patients underwent TAE and demonstrated median OS of 14.3 months in patients with unresectable ICC compared to 13.4 months with conventional transarterial embolization (TACE), 10.5 months with drug-eluting bead (DEB), and 11.3 months with Y90 radioembolization (p = 0.46) [35]. In a six-patient study by Niu et al, with one of whom possessed ICC, TAE was associated with a partial response (PR) at 1-month post-procedure but demonstrated progressive disease at 3 months post-procedure by RE-CIST 1.1 criteria [36].…”
