Summary The present investigation was conducted to determine the influence of dopamine (DA) receptor agonist bromocriptine (BRO) on reproduction and onset of puberty in the viviparous fish Gambusia affinis. In the first experiment, the mean number of stage I and II follicles (previtellogenic) in 0.8 or 5 mg BRO treated fish did not show significant difference compared to those of experimental controls, whereas the mean number of stage III follicles were significantly lower in 5 mg BRO treated fish compared to experimental controls. However, treatment of 0.8 or 5 mg BRO resulted in significantly lower numbers of stage IV (early vitellogenic) and V (late vitellogenic) follicles compared to those of experimental controls. There was decrease in the percent occurrence of pregnancy and different stages of embryos in BRO treated fish compared with the experimental controls. Concomitant with this, sparsely distributed gonadotropin releasing hormone immunoreactive (GnRH‐ir) fibres were observed in the proximal pars distalis (PPD) region of the pituitary gland in BRO treated fish compared to those of dense accumulations of these fibres in the PPD region of the pituitary gland in experimental controls. In the second experiment, exposure of juveniles (25 DPH) to same doses of BRO for 45 days resulted in complete absence of vitellogenic follicles and presence of few GnRH‐ir fibres in 5 mg BRO treated juvenile in contrast to presence of vitellogenic follicles and dense aggregation of GnRH fibres in treatment controls. Overall, the results of the present investigation suggest that DA affects ovarian follicular and embryonic development and onset of puberty in viviparous species.

Fish sperm motility is nowadays considered the best biomarker for the quality of fish spermatozoa, and sperm motion parameters from more than 300 fish species have been reported in more than 1500 scientific articles covering a wide range of topics, from molecular biology to ecology. The most studied topics have been (i) the sperm storage (involving both the use of chilled-storage protocols for shortterm periods and sperm cryopreservation techniques for long-term storage), (ii) the sperm physiology (fathom in the spermatozoa activation process and the whole propulsion machinery of the sperm cells) and (iii) the broodstock management (covering aspects such as rearing conditions, dietary requirements or hormonal induction treatments). In addition, other aquaculture and ecological topics, such as (iv) the knowledge of the breeding cycle of the species, (v) the phenomenon of the sperm competition and (vi) ecotoxicological studies for the evaluation of aquatic environments, have also been approached from the evaluation of sperm motion performance. Therefore, fish sperm motility assessment can serve as a potential tool for aquaculture and ecological purposes, covering key topics of fundamental and applied research. This review gives an overview of the major research areas in which fish sperm motility has been applied successfully.

Barbs are India's native group of ornamental fish, and it has a wide recognition in the global ornamental fish trade (Sarkar & Lakra, 2010).Barbs come under Cyprinidae family, which is the largest freshwater family and widely distributed around the world. Barb's attractive colour and shape, large scales, schooling behaviour, easy to maintain and breed qualities have made them popular in the aquarium trade (Tamaru, 1997). Puntius species are popular at international level because of their striking colours and attractive shape (Collins, 2012).Dawkinsia rohani synonym of Puntius rohani (Devi et al., 2010) is a cyprinid fish native to Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India. It is an endemic ornamental barb of the Western Ghats and inhabits the hill streams of Kanyakumari District in Tamil Nadu draining into the Arabian Sea (Devi et al., 2010).
