Application of DInSAR and Spatial Statistics Methods in Analysis of Surface Displacements Caused by Induced Tremors

Abstract: Induced seismicity is one of the negative phenomena caused by anthropogenic activities that include mining of minerals. This phenomenon manifests itself as sudden and unpredictable shocks of rock mass, which can cause surface deformation and damage to ground infrastructure. Until the advent of satellite radar interferometry that enables analysis of historical events, the characteristics of these unexpected surface deformations were difficult to assess. The main aim of the research was the spatial analysis of t… Show more

“…Every year, at least a few earthquakes with energies greater than 10E7 J are recorded [61,[67][68][69][70][71]. Moreover, mining-induced earthquakes in the study area caused much greater velocity and quantity of ground displacements than land subsidence caused directly by the extraction of copper ore deposits [67,[72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83].…”

“…More mature technical methods include D-InSAR (Differometric Synthetic Aperture Radar ), IPTA(Interferometric Point Target Analysis), Stacking [8], and SBAS(Small Baseline Subset). D-InSAR technology is widely used in seismic deformation observation because of its advantages of convenience, high precision, low cost, and high sensitivity to deformation [9]. D-InSAR technology uses multi-period complex radar image coherent information to extract surface deformation, the accuracy can reach the millimeter level [10], d has a high efficiency of large-area surface deformation monitoring [11].…”

“…Accordingly, the geographical extension of the area affected by terrain deformation varies, depending mainly on the depth of the excavation room, with deformation cone footprints ranging from a few hundreds of meters to kilometers. On the other hand, the temporal deformation behavior changes the deformation rate caused by small collapsing events or heavy mining-induced seismic tremors, which are considered the most serious threat to the built environment due to their unpredictable nature [1,2]. Such deformation phenomena can cause severe damage to buildings and infrastructures; thus, accurate monitoring of the affected area is necessary and often compulsory.…”
