Application of Design of Experiment (DoE) for Parameters Optimization in Compression Moulding for Flax Reinforced Biocomposites

Abstract: Lately, widespread research on polymer composites that consist of natural fiber as reinforcement have been widely discussed. In this work, an attempt on optimizing the hot press forming process parameters using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) have been made to improve the mechanical properties of the woven flax/PLA composites. Three independent process variables, including moulding temperature, time and pressure were studied. Through the Box Behnken approach, a set of experiment runs based on various combin… Show more

“…With the high values of R 2 for CC, HC, and LC; these mean that the precision and reliability of the study were carefully carried out. The results for CC, HC, and LC were the familiar trends by authors in the research area [40][41][42][43][44]. Figure 2(a-c) pictures the graph of real experimental values against the RSM values for the improvement in the composition of the treated SBBWF for CC, HC, and LC, respectively.…”

“…14 The processing parameters for the manufacturing of thermoplastic composites are very important as these parameters such as processing temperature, pressure and time have a direct influence on the mechanical properties and performance of the final composite product depending on the individual machine and materials. 15,16 The development of composites of high temperature polymers with leather fibres via melt-mixing technique requires proper settings of processing parameters for ultimate performance of the composites. These parameters, especially temperature is critical in the processing of high temperature thermoplastic composites as low processing temperature will lead to nonhomogeneous distribution of fibres and on the other hand, higher processing temperature might result to thermal degradation of the fibres as well as the matrix.…”

“…Depending on the individual machine and materials, there might be more or fewer parameters involved, but the three most important ones are the processing pressure, temperature, and time [4]. There are several studies that investigate various aspects of compression molded thermoplastic composites.…”
