Fuzzy ball drilling fluids have been developed in order to effectively control lost circulation during CBM drilling. Depending upon fuzzy balls and colloids in fuzzy balls, the fuzzy ball drilling fluids changed their shapes and properties to completely plug underground heterogeneous seepage channels so as to strengthen the pressure bearing capacity of formations. This paper describes the available features of the fuzzy ball drilling fluid including efficient plugging, good carrying and suspension, formation damage control, compatible weighted by any weighted materials without auxiliary equipment. The fuzzy ball drilling fluids can finish drilling in low pressure natural gas zone, control CBM leakage; control the natural fractures, drilling in different pressures in the same open hole, combination with the air drilling mode, etc. during Ordos CBM drilling. The fuzzy ball drilling fluid will not affect down-hole motors and MWD. The fuzzy ball drilling fluid will be blend simply as conventional water based drilling fluids. The existing CBM drilling equipment can completely meet the fuzzy ball drilling mixing and it is maintained conveniently. The fuzzy ball drilling fluid is the efficient drilling fluid.

This paper presents an improved Water Ecological Carrying Capacity (WECC) evaluation index system based on Pressure-Support Force-State (PSS) Index Framework. This index system can reflect the internal relationships of WECC, highlight the direct WECC impact factors, and to some extent avoid the past problems of selecting similar indicators and poor correlation indicators with WECC using former index systems. The WECC evaluation of Tieling City is processed under PSS index system. The evaluation results show that the average value of WECC is 0.59 from 2005 to 2010. It is concluded that this city is under a weak carrying level and generally in accordance with the real situation.

Drilling and completion technologies of coalbed methane exploitation: an overview

Coalbed methane (CBM) drilling and completion technologies (DCTs) are significant basis for achieving efficient CBM exploration and exploitation. Characteristics of CBM reservoirs vary in different regions around the world, thereby, it is crucial to develop, select and apply the optimum DCTs for each different CBM reservoir. This paper firstly reviews the development history of CBM DCTs throughout worldwide and clarifies its overall development tendency. Secondly, different well types and its characteristics of CBM exploitation are summarized, and main application scopes of these well types are also discussed. Then, the key technologies of CBM drilling (directional drilling tools, measurement while drilling, geo-steering drilling, magnetic guidance drilling, underbalanced drilling and drilling fluids), and the key technologies of CBM completion (open-hole, cavity and under-ream completion, cased-hole completion, screen pipe completion and horizontal well completion) are summarized and analyzed, it is found that safe, economic and efficient development of CBM is inseparable from the support of advanced technologies. Finally, based on the current status of CBM development, the achievements, existing challenges and future prospects are summarized and discussed from the perspective of CBM DCTs.
