“…The most notorious and common pathogenic Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Pullorum strains are primary enteric pathogens that not only inhibit human and animal health but also cause food poisoning and food-related epidemics around the world (Sable et al, 2000; Ma et al, 2016; Fan et al, 2017). Especially, fresh produce, such as milk, meat, and egg, is increasingly related to the incidence of foodborne illness, and outbreaks associated with fresh produce consumption by human or animals have risen substantially recently (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2010, 2013).…”

“…Due to a previous report on the antimicrobial activity of CM against E. coli, an MIC for CM was first tested against the host E. coli. We also determined the MIC of CM for Salmonella serovar Montevideo to compare the antibacterial efficacy of our product with the same formulation reported elsewhere [43]. In our study, the respective MICs for the E. coli and Salmonella were 0.006% and 0.008% (w/v).…”

“…Chitosan is an environmentally friendly carbohydrate biopolymer and is recognized for delivering a broad in vivo and in vitro antibacterial activity. For example, CM has been successfully applied for the mitigation of Salmonella in agricultural water [39,42,43]. The antiviral activity of CM was tested against murine norovirus and bacteriophage MS2 in PBS (pH 7.4).…”

“…Naturally, degradable materials mostly include polysaccharides and proteins, which are not only cheap and easy to obtain, but may also degrade by chemical or microbiological processes without causing significant environmental pollution . Besides, the degradation of some natural materials may also facilitate the production of crops and increase the production output . Therefore, naturally degradable materials as a pesticide carrier may effectively solve the carrier residue problem of new pesticide formulations.…”
