Abstract. Accurate prediction of the construction duration is imperative to the reliable cash flow analysis during the project planning phase when feasibility analysis is carried out. However, lack of information and frequent changes that occur as a result of a negotiation process between the owner and the designer in defining the project scope make it difficult to compute real-time construction duration. Domestic and foreign models for calculating the construction durations cannot be readily applied to computation of construction duration for general office buildings in Korea specifically during the project planning phase as there is a limit in its applicability due to numerous restrictions. Moreover, there are no preceding studies suggesting different computational approaches to predict the entire construction duration for office buildings with the approximate construction duration concept during planning phase. Therefore, based on the collected performance data, this study proposes a multiple linear regression model that facilitates reliable prediction of approximate construction duration for office buildings in the project planning phase. The model will allow the owner and other stakeholders to predict the real-time construction duration using the basic information on office buildings and to assess the construction durations incorporating frequent changes during the project planning phase.

Estimating approximate construction duration of CFRD in the planning stage

At present, there is no criterion to estimate the construction duration of a dam in the planning stage. Public agents estimate the construction duration of a dam based on their experience or sometimes, their needs. It often results in insufficient construction time during the construction stage. This results in quality deterioration and economic loss because of carrying out work on urgent basis frequently. Therefore, there has been a constant need for the estimation model of construction duration. This study targets ConcreteFaced Rock-fill Dam (CFRD), which is the most constructed type of dams in Korea. It aims to develop a model for the estimation of the construction duration of a dam in the planning stage. For this purpose, standard C.P. is identified from the process planning data, and the properties of the standard C.P. are analyzed to estimate the duration of each activity on C.P., and then two construction duration estimation models for CFRD are proposed. The results show that the two models have an error under 10% when compared with the estimation based on detailed design.

Fatigue-related crashes are one of the major threats to road safety worldwide. Despite the substantial work in the domain of transportation science by both the industry and academia, there are few studies in applying casebased reasoning (CBR) approach to modelling the risk of driver fatigue. This research explores the potential for fatigued driving using a database of 16,459 traffic crashes reported from 21 cities in Guangdong province, China from 2006 to 2010. The CBR system under development differentiates between fatigueddriving and non-fatigued-driving cases based on various personal and environmental traffic characteristics. The advantage of using CBR in modelling fatigued driving has been demonstrated through empirical evaluation.
