The lack of transparency and traceability in food supply chains (FSCs) is raising concerns among consumers and stakeholders about food information credibility, food quality, and safety. Insufficient records, a lack of digitalization and standardization of processes, and information exchange are some of the most critical challenges, which can be tackled with disruptive technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and distributed ledger technologies (DLTs). Studies provide evidence that novel technological and sustainable practices in FSCs are necessary. This paper aims to describe current practical applications of DLTs and IoT in FSCs, investigating the challenges of implementation, and potentials for future research directions, thus contributing to achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Within a systematic literature review, the content of 69 academic publications was analyzed, describing aspects of implementation and measures to address the challenges of scalability, security, and privacy of DLT, and IoT solutions. The challenges of high costs, standardization, regulation, interoperability, and energy consumption of DLT solutions were also classified as highly relevant, but were not widely addressed in literature. The application of DLTs in FSCs can potentially contribute to 6 strategic SDGs, providing synergies and possibilities for more sustainable, traceable, and transparent FSCs.

BackgroundBlockchain is a new methodology involving a data structure with list of records, called blocks, which are linked using cryptography. The aim of the review is to overview the existing publication, projects, and platforms on the use of blockchain in Medicine and Neurology.MethodsWe searched the bibliographic database of MEDLINE and BASE. We also accessed ICObench, Coinmarketcap, and Mobihealthnews databases to explore upcoming, ongoing, and ended projects.ResultsIn medicine, there are many projects related to health care, disease prevention, and promotion of healthy life style. In neurology, only one project looks promising: Neuro, an ongoing scientific-technical project uniting scientists, engineers, and programmers for development of new architectures and algorithms of neural networks. Bibliographic searches found 117 publications on Medline and 203 publications on BASE referring to the use of blockchain technology in medicine. Most of them are presented as reviews (narrative, systematic, or minireview), opinions and hypotheses, commentaries, or perspectives. As for Neurology, only one publication refers to the use of blockchain, specifically to Parkinson’s disease.DiscussionAmong the problems related to medicine, there is the lack of information on the patient’s clinical history that could allow accurate diagnosis and treatment. The possibility of having a register based on blockchain technology could help doctors in many ways, including patient management, choosing and monitoring treatments, and standardization of clinical trials.ConclusionThe use of the blockchain technology in medicine has been repetitively proposed to solve different problems. In this article, we highlight the possible benefits of this technology, with attention to Neurology. Blockchain use can lead to quantifiable benefits in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, especially in clinical trials that can fail because of an incorrect patient recruitment.

The nexus between manufacturing firms and the green environment is unavoidable. It is merely due to the huge waste generation and greenhouse gas emissions resulting from large‐scale production and complex supply chain management processes involved in manufacturing firms. Continuation of the traditional business practices during Industry 4.0 made it impossible for the manufacturing firm to commit to green environmental practices and comply with environmental SDGs. At odd, it requires novel business strategies to ensure compliance of manufacturing firms with environmental sustainable development goals (SDGs). Blockchain is an ideal technology for delivering green environmental‐related information because it offers real‐time, shareable, and entirely transparent data kept on an immutable ledger that is accessible to members of a network. These green environmental‐related information received in real‐time through blockchain technology help in the transformation of the traditional supply chain management practices into a more green supply chain management practice. This green transformation ensures business compliance with environmental SDGs and that compliance is shared with multiple stakeholders through blockchain technology in real‐time, thus approving a positive mediating role of green supply chain management practices between blockchain technology and environmental SDGs performance. The proposed strategic framework through various propositions development will mainly offer policy insights toward (a) identifying novel antecedents of blockchain technology, (b) offering insights toward upgrading the traditional supply chain management framework into a green supply chain management framework, and (c) illuminating novel mediating role of green supply chain management practices between blockchain technology and environmental SDGs performance.
