Application of BEM (boundary element method)-based acoustic holography to radiation analysis of sound sources with arbitrarily shaped geometries

Abstract: A method employing holograms that conform with arbitrarily shaped sources has been developed for enhancing conventional near-field acoustic holography, which has been limited to sources with simple geometries, e.g., planar or cylindrical surfaces. Four holography transformation algorithms have been developed, based on acoustic holography theory and the boundary element method (BEM). Singular value decomposition (SVD) has been incorporated into the algorithms in order to alleviate the ill-posed nature frequentl… Show more

“…This method consists on solving the BEM equations for one unknown boundary parameter at a time. In addition, truncation of some singular values (known as truncated-SVD or T-SVD [8,12,13],) is done to reduce the sensitivity to noise. This approach is briefly discussed here for the purpose of comparisons in further numerical examples.…”

“…The near-field acoustic holography (NAH) is the most representative technique in this context (e.g. [7][8][9]). On the other hand, scarce work in this context has been done for the in situ measurement of acoustic impedance.…”

“…Inverse numerical acoustics techniques using both the direct and indirect boundary element methods have been investigated previously [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. In INA, the goal is to solve for the surface normal velocities using measured field point sound pressures.…”

“…1 Earlier work presented the basic concept of using BEM ͑mainly the direct formulation͒ in reconstruction problems for setting up a transfer matrix, while the singular value decomposition ͑SVD͒ routine is part of the matrix inversion. [2][3][4] More recent work also deals with the reconstruction process based on indirect BEM for selecting optimum field points from a set of candidates. 5 Applications involving inverse source problems based on BEM can be found, for example, within the automotive and aerospace industry.…”
