Application of an Automated Digital Image-Processing Method for Quantitative Assessment of Cracking Patterns in a Lime Cement Matrix

Abstract: The paper presents an original approach to the localization and analysis of the cracking patterns of cement composites. The lime cement matrix modified with microsilica was evaluated under a two-phase thermal load. For quantitative detection and analysis of thermal cracks, an image-processing method was applied. For this purpose, an original image double-segmentation method was developed using machine-learning algorithms. Among other things, the fractal analysis was used to describe the morphology and … Show more

“…Pore structure usually affects the macro mechanical properties of concrete and fractal dimension is a parameter describing pore structure. Many scholars have tried to establish the relationship between fractal dimension and macro properties of concrete, such as porosity (Huang et al 2021), compressive strength (Wang et al 2021), shear stiffness (Xie et al 1997) and fracture damage (Szeląg 2020a(Szeląg , 2020b, but they often failed to get a unified conclusion. According to Zhang's drying method (Zhang et al 2017), the strength of concrete will only have a little decrease theoretically.…”

“…where L S is the length of the test line, i.e., the diameter of the analyzed area in the longitudinal direction, N C,i is the number of cracks intersecting the i-th test line, and n = 4 stands for the number of test lines in a single sample [52]. The area occupied by cracks (A C ) and the total area of the analyzed region (A I ) is measured in pixels.…”
