Skin is the largest and heaviest organ in the human body also one of the most important and act as a barrier that separates our organism from the environment. The nature of this cover is physical, chemical, and immunological. It controls the flow of substances between the environment and the body. Skin pH between 5-7 works as a chemical barrier that helps to maintain its integrity and natural microbiota (Dragicevic, Maibach, 2015).Langerhans cells, dermal dendritic cells and macrophages are specialized skin cells that make the skin an immunecompetent organ (Dragicevic, Maibach, 2015;Wiznia, Elbuluk, 2017). The skin carries out metabolic functions like vitamin D synthesis. Furthermore, thermo-regulation, excretion, endocrine and sensitivity are other functions performed by the skin. (Dragicevic, Maibach 2015) The histological structure of the skin consists of a complex architecture that has three fundamental layers: epidermis, dermis and hypodermis (Figure 1A). The epidermis is the outermost layer. (Wiznia, Elbuluk, 2017) The main constituent cells of this layer are keratinocytes corresponding to 95 %, the remaining 5 % of the cells are melanocytes, Langerhans cells and dermal dendritic cells (Dragicevic, Maibach, 2015;Wiznia, Elbuluk, 2017) Melanocytes fulfill the production of melanin, which is the main endogenous defense of the skin to protect us against UV-radiation (UVR) (Norman, Menendez, 2008). Seaweeds are valuable marine plants that have garnered much attention from the public due to their high bioactive, nutrients and minerals content. Seaweeds have been used in multiple applications, including in cosmeceutical, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries. Nevertheless, this review will focus on the bioactive compounds of Chlorophyta and their potential application in nutraceutical and cosmeceutical industries. Chlorophyta are believed to possess a significant amount of nutrients and minerals, sufficient to meet the daily requirements of nutrients and minerals in the human body. Considering the nutritional aspect, deficiency in nutrients may lead to severe ailments, including heart disease, neurological disorder and cancer. The main compounds studied in this review are polysaccharides, proteins, amino acids, lipids, fatty acids, pigments, minerals, vitamins and secondary metabolites. Among all, polysaccharides are the most exploited compounds and used in many advanced applications in the nutraceutical and cosmeceutical industries. This review also offers insights into the beneficial biological properties of Chlorophyta, highlighting their potential in cosmeceutical and nutraceutical applications. Further research is required to highlight the Chlorophyta sp. aquaculture, its extraction method, and the most targeted bioactive compounds from the species. Therefore, the challenge is to increase public awareness of the promising application of this species in the nutraceutical and cosmeceutical industries.

Applications of Natural, Semi-Synthetic, and Synthetic Polymers in Cosmetic Formulations

Cosmetics composed of synthetic and/or semi-synthetic polymers, associated or not with natural polymers, exhibit a dashing design, with thermal and chemo-sensitive properties. Cosmetic polymers are also used for the preparation of nanoparticles for the delivery of, e.g., fragrances, with the purpose to modify their release profile and also reducing the risk of evaporation. Besides, other cosmetically active nutrients, dermal permeation enhancers, have also been loaded into nanoparticles to improve their bioactivities on the skin. The use of natural polymers in cosmetic formulations is of particular relevance because of their biocompatible, safe, and eco-friendly character. These formulations are highly attractive and marketable to consumers, and are suitable for a plethora of applications, including make-up, skin, and hair care, and as modifiers and stabilizers. In this review, natural synthetic, semi-synthetic, and synthetic polymers are discussed considering their properties for cosmetic applications. Their uses in conventional and novel formulations are also presented.
