Application of AI in Chemical Engineering

Abstract: A major shortcoming of traditional strategies is the fact that solving chemical engineering problems due to the highly nonlinear behavior of chemical processes is often impossible or very difficult. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are becoming useful due to simple implementation, easy designing, generality, robustness and flexibility. The AI includes various branches, namely, artificial neural network, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithm, expert systems and hybrid systems. They have been widely used … Show more

“…The topology used was a multilayer feed‐forward net, which is commonly used to model chemical engineering systems, [ 27,39 ] with just one hidden layer (Figure 1). The activation function used was the ‘tansig’ function, which is the package's default.…”

“…Artificial neural networks are presented as an alternative for the classical models to solve complex problems and are widely used to model chemical engineering processes. [ 26,27 ] This modelling has been used in different mass transfer processes such as adsorption. [ 24,28–32 ] Regardless of the highly nonlinear behaviour and the presence of several input variables, the ANNs had the capability to successfully describe the adsorption process.…”

“…The chemical industry is increasingly interested in using AI to address challenges in process modeling, optimization, control, and fault detection and diagnosis (Hajjar et al., 2016). Many of those aspects are related to the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of the chemical industry.…”

“…They have been widely used in the field of chemical engineering, for modeling, process control, and classification, including several branches such as artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, expert systems, and hybrid systems. 8 This can be found, for example, in the simulation of a semi-industrial thickener plant based on computational fluid dynamics to investigate the effects of the thickener on the parameters’ performance. 3 In recent years, the mining industry in Chile has begun to use and observe an increase in interest in artificial intelligence techniques in processes such as the estimation of copper production, where traditional methods tend to lack certainty and knowledge.…”
