Purpose This paper aims to provide a critical reflection on the Great Resignation in the hospitality and tourism industry in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, this paper reviews the causes and effects of the Great Resignation, addresses the labor shortage in this industry and proposes strategies that can help manage the challenges. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on a critical analysis of emerging phenomena, related literature and researchers’ experiences and insights. Findings The Great Resignation has presented unprecedented challenges for the hospitality and tourism industry. A closer examination reveals that the pandemic has served as a catalyst rather than a leading cause of this trend. Workforce issues are becoming increasingly complex under contemporary influences, including internal elements such as new explications at work and external factors like the gig economy and technology implementation. Practical implications This study provides practical implications on how Hospitality and Tourism practitioners can respond to the Great Resignation on micro, meso and macro levels. The practical implications revolve around employees’ changing needs and preferences in the wave of Great Resignation, as well as the necessity for employers’ reflection and improvement. Originality/value This study marks an initial attempt to provide a critical assessment of a contemporary issue involving the Great Resignation. This paper extends its discussion through an advanced analysis of the issue, offers suggestions to manage current obstacles related to labor issues in hospitality and tourism, and illuminates future research directions.

The study examines the effect of green human resource management (GHRM) on the environmental performance of hotels. It also investigates the crucial role of pro-environmental psychological capital, psychological green climate, and pro-environmental behaviors to enhance the environmental performance. The target population consisted of green hotel employees. Data collected using a survey questionnaire from 374 employees were subjected to partial least squares structural equation modeling for analysis. As per the findings, green human resource practices (green training and development, green performance management and appraisal, and green empowerment) are significant predictors for pro-environmental psychological capital, which further contributes positively toward the psychological green climate. It was also found that the psychological green climate is positively related to pro-environmental behaviors. Findings revealed that employees’ pro-environmental behaviors play a significant role to enhance the environmental performance of hotels. Moreover, it is indicated that green HRM practices indirectly contribute to environmental performance through pro-environmental psychological capital, psychological green climate, and pro-environmental behaviors. This study is one of the few attempts to integrate the green HRM practices with pro-environmental psychological capital, green climate, and pro-environmental behaviors to predict the environmental performance in hotels. It examines the moderating role of environmental consciousness that was almost ignored. This study is important for hotels that are trying to adopt green HR practices. It provided several suggestions to the practitioners while making the strategy to promote environmental performance with the help of green HR practices through various ways. It also assists the hotel management to enhance pro-environmental psychological capital by promoting green recruitment and selection, green training and development, green performance management and appraisal, and green empowerment for the promotion of environmental performance.

This research explores the mediating role of perceived usefulness and enjoyment of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teaching practice between secondary teachers’ competencies and attitudes in the formal educational context. Also, the research aimed to examine if the relationships between model constructs differ by STEM teaching practice dimension (e.g., Inquiry-based learning (IBL) and Integration of STEM content (INT)). We synthesized the will, skill, tool model (WST), technology acceptance model (TAM) and flow theory (FLT) to develop a theoretical model predicting teacher attitude under the influence of Competencies, Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Enjoyment. Therefore, a mediated multigroup model with validated data from three hundred Romanian secondary teachers who completed questionnaires related to their competencies, perceived usefulness, enjoyment, and attitude toward STEM teaching practices was used. Two comparative teacher survey studies were carried out: one for IBL and one for INT. There are direct and positive relationships between Competencies and Attitude, Competencies and Enjoyment, Competencies and Usefulness, and Enjoyment and Attitude for both IBL and INT teaching practices. The partial least squares path modeling (PLS-SEM) results showed that the control variables had no significant impact on attitude. This research supports evidence for the belief that teachers’ competency is a key predictor of attitude. Precisely, the positive strong direct effect of Competencies on Attitude is similar for IBL (β = 0.49, t = 7.46, p < 0.001; f 2 (Effect size) = 0.29) with for INT teaching practice (β = 0.46, t = 6.46, p < 0.001; f2 (Effect size) = 0.22). Interestingly, this research showed that the perceived Usefulness and Enjoyment partially mediated the association between Competencies and Attitude in both case studies. Understanding the mediating role of perceived usefulness and enjoyment for each STEM practice would help teachers successfully implement STEM education.
