Application of AHP and corrective factors for the determination of best available techniques and emission limit values at installation level: A case study in four cement installations

Abstract: After the adoption of the Industrial Emissions Directive in the European Union, requirements regarding emission limit values were made legally binding, and the competent authorities shall ensure that they do not exceed the emission levels associated with the best available techniques. This paper describes a two-stage method for the determination of best available techniques (BAT) and emission limit values (ELV) at installation level, applicable to all industrial sectors covered by the IED and to all pollutants… Show more

“…For example, the European Union has called for the ratification and implementation of the "Best Available Techniques (BAT)" in industrial cement and lime production (Schorcht et al, 2013;Valderrama et al, 2012). The reference document proposes reduced fuel consumption, low organic raw materials selection, and the utilization of low carbon heating values to replace coal (Giner-Santonja et al, 2019;Schorcht et al, 2013). (Calvo et al, 2021).…”

“…A significant part of these papers addresses matters of sustainable environmental management and applications of modern pro-ecology technologies in technical engineering. For example, Ghimire and Kim [51] and Wang et al [52] raised the issue of using unconventional energy sources, while Giner-Santonja et al [53] studied pollution emissions to the air. The AHP method has also been used in studies concerning urban river systems [54], surface water quality assessment [55] and wastewater treatment plants [56].…”

“…The AHP method is a multi-criteria and multi-factor decision-making method that quantitatively analyzes qualitative problems. It can classify the various factors in the process of complex system problem processing in an orderly manner, and integrate the researcher's objective judgments with expert opinions, thereby achieving the importance analysis of elements through the pairwise comparison, and a wide range of applications in the engineering field [23][24][25][26]. The specific implementation steps are as follows.…”
