Application of abscisic acid (S-ABA) and sucrose to improve colour, anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity of cv. Crimson Seedless grape berries

Abstract: Background and Aims:In some years, the table grape cultivar Crimson Seedless does not reach the commercially acceptable level of red colour in Mediterranean climates, with negative consequences for the grower. Application of abscisic acid (S-ABA) and sucrose could be a tool for overcoming this problem. Methods and Results: A commercial formulation of S-ABA (400 mg/L) and sucrose (10%) was applied to Crimson Seedless at the beginning of veraison and 5 days later in order to verify the effect on harvestable bunc… Show more

“…As has been previously observed (Rogiers et al, 2004; Wheeler et al, 2009; Sun et al, 2010; Ferrara et al, 2015), there was an abrupt increase in berry ABA concentration in non-treated fruit immediately preceding the rapid rise in total anthocyanin concentration during veraison. Although ABA levels started to decrease 3 weeks post-veraison, anthocyanin concentration continued to rise throughout the ripening period, albeit at a much lower rate ( Figure 1B ).…”

“…The values obtained from skin colour analysis showed how LBV was characterised by a higher lightness ( L* ) as well as a higher colour saturation ( C* ) than the NBV, similarly to S‐ABA treated clusters, while the h ° values were the same for both accessions. The results of the consumer test (Fig.…”

“…These contradictory results may be due to the presence of seeds in the berries, since the latter studies do not employ treatment for seedless; it is well known that berry ripening is affected by the presence or absence of seeds [34] [35]. In this context, it is worth noting that exogenous ABA treatment modifies total anthocyanin concentration and anthocyanin composition in "Crimson Seedless" grape berries [36].…”
