Application of a Risk Analysis Tool to Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS‐CoV) Outbreak in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: The Grunow-Finke assessment tool (GFT) is an accepted scoring system for determining likelihood of an outbreak being unnatural in origin. Considering its high specificity but low sensitivity, a modified Grunow-Finke tool (mGFT) has been developed with improved sensitivity. The mGFT has been validated against some past disease outbreaks, but it has not been applied to ongoing outbreaks. This study is aimed to score the outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in Saudi Arabia using bot… Show more

“…The outbreak of new infectious diseases in recent years has caused great losses to human health, quality of life and economy. Millions of infections were caused worldwide by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in 2003, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in 2012, Ebola virus in 2014, Zika virus in 2015, and the plague in Madagascar in 2017 [1][2][3].…”

“…The internal application contains full data access, dashboards with relevant visualizations (for mapping, statistical analytics, searching, or decision support), a user administration panel, and searchable access to the database. EPIWATCH is supplemented by the development of tools such as a seasonal influenza forecasting tool (FLUCAST), 7 an epidemic risk analysis tool (EPIRISK), 8 and a tool for determining the origins of epidemics, 9 all of which have been tested through rigorous research.…”

“…A recent review on the factors contributing to the SARS-CoV-2 virus outbreak in Wuhan, China argued that the combination of several factors such as external environment, natural hosts, intermediate hosts and susceptible populations had resulted in the incidence of SARS-CoV in the past, and these could have likewise been responsible for the current incidence of SARS-CoV-2 [ 23 ]. The likelihood of the unnatural origin of SARS-CoV-2 cannot be ignored, as has been reported for MERS-CoV using the Grunow–Finke assessment tool (GFT) [ 40 ]. However, additional studies may be conducted to support such claims.…”
